Default 1940 Ford stumbles when making a sharp left or right turn

New carb has run very well the last couple months, but when now making left or right hand turns onto other streets.....it stumbles and acts like it's not getting enough fuel. Going straight on roads no probs. I've got the electric pump and a fuel reg. Could it be a sticky float ?

Thx.....Mike

water in the carb bowl--try draining the bowl using one of the plugs-drain into jar lid and look for water

While not disregarding the suggestion above (I wouldn't have thought of that) my first idea was low float level.

Just as a follow up....I spoke to Joe's Antique Auto in Mass. area and he called Dennis Carpenter as it was their carb. No problems sending back and it'll be taken care of. I made it a point of including a copy of this web site responses with the Carb.

Great follow up with both part houses !

Thx again.....Mike

JMO, and my $ .02 worth. Box up your old carburetor you replaced with the new one, SEND IT TO CHARLIENY. Let him work his magic on it!!!

1.) You will have an "EXTRA" for times just like this. You will have an extra in case of ANY unforeseen emergency.

2) I promise you, once you install his carb.....you "MAY" have to make a slight adjustment on the air mixture screws AND "maybe" adjust the idle screw a touch......BUT That is it!!!!!

3) it's cheap insurance!!!

Glad to hear that the first one is getting taken care of with no real hassle's!!!

Check to see if your motor mounts are well tensioned or soft. If the engine moves under a hard pull or braking, an abraded wire making contact with a ground can produce that effect. It is rare, but we have seen it. So can a loose contact at the coil or distributor.

Just a follow up.....Joe's Antique Parts and Dennis Carpenter were really great. They worked and worked to get the carb to work but no luck. They sent me a new one that I got in 3 days shipping and installed this week and runs great. I still intend on getting the original Carb rebuilt just to have on hand.

They could not find out what the problem was with the other one I bought from them !!

Thx.....Mike

Rock thx.....

It was recommended that I pull it out and have rebuilt by Charlie. I think you said that.

I'm just a little leery of pulling it out and then having a hassle to reinstall it !!

One thing that I did do that was recommended....it I had the "original" 1940 Coil rebuilt by Skip Haney and with the new carb it seems to be running very well now. I would pull the Distrib when I store the car for Winter and worry about re-installing in Spring or if I get some nice weather I'd do it before then.

Thx much for the info.

Either Charlie or Mike is very capable of doing your distributor. I personally have not sent a distributor to Charlie BUT I have sent numerous carburetors and fuel pumps. I have a couple of fuel pumps I NEED to get to him right now. Mike at Third Gen has done several of my distributors (he's much closer to me location wise). PM me your address and I will send you a set of my home made distributor studs that are a tremendous help for installing your distributor and making sure the offset key way is lined up correctly before you install the bolt into the block!!!! They also help hold it in place so YOU don't have to sit and hold it while trying to line the key way up!!!! OR you can email at [email protected] and I can send you pictures of what i made and you can make yourself a set. They are a God send!!!!

Rock....

I'll send you an email.

I spoke too soon.....installed the rebuilt coil and she fired right up and idles perfect around 300 rpm. It still stumbles now until I get into 3rd gear. This is crazy as hell. The only thing I haven't changed is the electric pump and rework the distributor. If it was the Dist you'd think it would stumble all the time !!! That wouldn't be intermittent I would think. This has happened to 3 carbs now !! You'd think one out of three would work !

Check the vacuum brake nut on the distributor and the whole vacuum advance line for tight fits and or possible leak. Eliminate that as a possible issue

ALSO Not sure what "stumbling" means BUT what carburetor are you running??? AND Have you tried relocating the accelerator pump rod position on the throttle linkage???

Do you still have the original wiring?
Check for a bare wire maybe thru the firewall.
