That is a hilarious video! A flathead doing that onto a concrete floor would not fare so well......

Three wheel engine stands are fine if built well. Once an engine is on the stand, I don't move it around much anyway. That's not the purpose. If you want to move it around, use a dolly.

Stumpy's fab works finally replied and I got a side adapter for my normal engine stand and a full cradle stand on the way; cost wise it was
1ea Ford Flatty Cradle @$48.00 and 1ea Side Adapter @ $69.00, shipping was $35 so I am all set for flatty engine work now.

Here is a stand I recently built. I bought a KR Wilson engine stand that was missing its base for $300.00 at the LA Roadster Show two-year's ago. I used some scrap metal I had to build the base for it. The caster wheels were $100.00, which seemed like a lot but they are good quality wheels. Its plenty heavy duty and its not going to tip over. That's a 59A engine thats going in a '34 pickup.

I have another engine on a KR Wilson stand. This one was missing its base too when I go it. I paid $100.00 for it year's ago at the Pomona Swap Meet. I bolted this one to the garage floor. I welded up a "T" brace to support the opposite of the engine since I knew it would be sitting on that stand for a long time. Its probably been 20-year's now. That engine is a standard bore '51 Merc with no cracks. The crank is machined .010/.010. I have a Potvin Super 3/8ths cam Bill Jenks ground for me before he passed away. I have everything but the pistons to put it together. It has rare set of 8BA block lettered Edelbrock heads. The Eddie Meyer Intake is original. The air cleaner is one a guy was making about 20-year's ago. I've only seen a couple others like it. This engine is going in a chopped '32 3-window I've had stashed away for 25-year's

I guess you could do the same thing with a flattie using the water pump mount holes for the front stands ...

Years ago I bought some flathead roll around engine stands. Don't know where they might still be available but this work great for an engine test stand as well ....

I know this post is a year old but I saw something interesting that I wanted to share. We had a '39 flathead rebuilt a few weeks ago and the builder had our engine mounted backwards on the stand. Meaning the front of the engine was facing the down tube of the engine stand. They told us that they've seen early flathead bell housing cracking from the weight. I didnt get a picture, but they had no problems with engine. Something to consider while you're working on your block.

It would be neat to see a photo of the above stand with 39 engine mounted on it.

Mounting it "Backwards" is possibly a good idea, but you can't put the cam in and out like that, unless you factor that into the mounting system.

Mounting it backwards would leave only 5/16" and a few 3/8" bolts to hold it. That would make me feel a little insecure.

There are some decent 7/16 bolts low down, but they are quite close together. I'd be wary of using the 5/16 timing cover bolts.

Bolt the engine block on passenger side exhaust if you want to install the bottom pan later with the dip stick tube attached.

Do you mean the ones used for '32 only mounts that are present on all blocks? Aren't they recessed into the front of the block?

Damn. That's a fine engine. That or a vintage Thickstun dual I take are my dream intakes.

I'll build myself an adapter for my engine stand. May even mod it for 4 castors.

Here a picture of the V12 I had mounted on the exhaust ports side that was made with a piece of angle iron and drilled the holes to match the exhaust port studs and welded a piece of tubing to slid into the engine stand.

Frenchy...Out of curiosity, does that V-12 sound ANYTHING like a Merlin or an Allison when you un-cork the headers? Probably not I'd guess, without the 12 individual exhaust stacks on the flyable configurations. DD

Odd piece of trivia: The Lincoln V12 is an odd fire engine. The 12 cylinders do not fire 60 degrees apart.

I noticed this when looking at my Churchill timing fixture.

Mart.

Edit: I found a post on it:
