Default 1932 steering box removal.

To remove steering box in a Model B can the tube stay in place and the steering shaft be slid down and out or must the tube come off with it? Would be a challenge to not scratch it.What is the best procedure? Seems like when I bought this car 50 years ago the tube was covered with a snug fitting protective cardboard sleeve (like a paper towel tube) from the firewall to box. I recall peeling the greasy old stuff off to reveal gleaming black enamel underneath. Was this some factory protection during assembly? Ring any bells? Thanks for any input!

Unless you were able to detach the steering gear box from the sector gear and sector gear housing with those still attached to the chassis frame, which I doubt is possible, you must detach the steering column bracket/ignition switch assembly from the dash in order to move the steering box toward the center of the chassis far enough to have the outer end of the sector gear clear its hole in the frame side rail.

The steering column tubes were originally covered with a thin cardboard tube during the vehicle assembly process as shown in the photo below. You can do the same thing with the cores of rolls of paper towels, for example, as shown in the second photo.
