Default 1931 RE-stamped firewalls...

Can someone explain the 1931 restamped firewalls to me.

Do show cars have these?

Which gastanks were they designed for?

Thanks.

Pluck

The 1931 restamped firewalls were flat 1930 firewalls that Ford had left over when they went to the indented firewall.

You will occasionally see an indented firewall that has the flat firewall raised bead smooshed in the indented area.

These restamped firewalls were originally intended to be used with gas tanks with cabin side shut off valve, but after restamping them with the indention, they will be used with the tanks that have the fuel shut off valve in the engine compartment.

Ford was just using up existing materials before switching over to the ones designed to be indented.

Restamped firewalls are accepted for fine point.

Here are a couple of shots of the firewall of my Dad's sedan -- you can easily see the "plug" welded in to fill the old hole for the gas line and the flattening of the ribs

Elrod has it historically right. There were about 5000 restamped firewalls. My S/W 4dr. (#4521989) had one, I didn't realize it until I restored the car. See the book "Henry's Fabulous Model A Ford" by Les Henry. There is a good explaination and a picture of a stack of firewalls. I have posted this info at least three times in the past 6 months!

Steve, please PM me for contact info, I have two early '29's with firewall dates etc. that I want to discuss with you

Steve Barb Birt`s show phone truck has a restamped fire wall and they had even put the holes in it for the data plate, the judges at last years NWR in cottage grove dock it points for having the holes in it. I found a picture of my restamped firewall on my '31 Town Sedan. The reproduction patent plate was installed in the same 4 holes that the original was in.

My restamped firewall is on a late 31 (Sept 1931 engine #) truck which further enforces the the fact that trucks got the left overs. Assuming the truck was actually assembled in Nov or Dec 31 (it had the Dec. version of the engine pans) they must have had a lot of early restamped firewalls laying around late in the year. Seems 5000 of them would have been used up long before the end of 31. Barb Birt

There are excellent photos already posted showing the traces of the flat firewall ribs.
