Here's something about NOS parts that many have found out the hard way:
What's referred to as NOS is sometimes technically incorrect, although the part may never have been installed on a car, they may have come very close, but were rejected at the assembly line. Parts that have remained unsold all these years are all suspect for this reason, or have been damaged in some way over the ensuing years. These parts today are better as seconds than any modern repro could ever hope to be, but just so you know, some will require a massage to make it fit.

He has warehouses full of NOS Ford parts, and he's a good guy. As of this past January, he had the correct Ford axle nuts in stock...NOS...the REAL deal. Not everything is available NOS, but a lot is. IMO it is always best to check for them first. The next best option is to check with suppliers that provide high quality parts and advice AND stand behind their parts. And yet another option is to have your existing part refurbished. The Barn is a great source for information on where to go for different parts and services. Your axle nuts are a great example, a lot of what is available from some suppliers are not usable. Oh, and there is always used parts.

To added to this, while NOS is often the best way to go, that is not always the case. Some parts degrade on the shelf. A good examples are some electrical parts like capacitors, coils, etc.

Unless damaged (like having been removed with a pipe wrench) the original axle nuts will be just fine.
Just draining out the old gas may not be enough. When a car sits long enough for the gas to evaporate out of the tank a varnish-like residue is left. Fresh gas (especially ethanol blends) will dissolve this residue.

When this stuff is burned in the cylinders, it leaves a goo on the exhaust valve stems that causes the valves to stick. Sometimes the only cure is to remove the valves to clean. You'd be ahead to drop the gas tank and get it boiled out at a radiator shop.
