60HP vs 85HP transmissions
Will an 85HP transmission bolt up to a 60HP bellhousing and vice versa. I've either forgotten or never knew. I'm thinking the answer is NO. How wrong am I? LOL

Re: 60HP vs 85HP transmissions
Thanks coopman, but they are not the same transmission are they? Clutch cross shafts are different length aren't they, at least per the Green book.

They ARE NOT the same transmission, for sure. Look at the shift COVER...on the 60 HP, that cover is held-on by ONLY 4 bolts. The 85 horse transmissions have SIX (6) bolts holding the covers on. Back in the early '60s when I was YOUNG and "sarcastic as usual", I put a used 60 HP in my '39 that I had taken the 'blown-up' 85 horse engine out of. Bolted right up, starter cranked it and clutch worked as normal. DD . |

Re: 60HP vs 85HP transmissions
I am having trouble posting a pic of Lawsons 60 and trans. His trans has the cast in bendix pocket on the bell and no other trans had that. 85/100 bendix was covered by a can in the rear of the oil pan.

Re: 60HP vs 85HP transmissions
Thats an interesting arrow in the vin number DD. I have seen just a straight -, and the common double single line arrow, but never a double triangle thing like that. Looks like the straight - was done first. A new one for me!

Re: 60HP vs 85HP transmissions
Lawson's engine apparently has the optional trans mentioned above with 85 gears and six bolts in the cap. His trans definitely has the bump for a starter bendix.
