Default 57 Ford Fuse

I arched the terminal on the back up light switch. Guess what, for the life of me I can't find the fuse! Anyone know where it is? I have the under dash out on the drivers side, and still can not find it. Anyone know where I can find it? Some times the smallest things turn into projects! I'm sure very one can relate... Turns out backup lights were an option on 1957 Fords, so I'd like to get them working again.

I think because back-up lights were an option their wiring diagrams came in the box with the parts needed, not in the general diagrams for the car, that makes them harder to find.
Their power source was usually on the headlight switch, possibly the same terminal as the tail-lights.

On the backup light switch, note the wire colors and see if the power source is from the headlight switch.
In approx '58 (?) the power source was changed to the ACC terminal on the ignition switch, for additional daytime safety.

Isn’t there a small glass fuse on the back of the sw? IIRC, that’s for all the lights but the headlights.

The HDL SW has two circuit breakers within- (1) HDL - (2) All Other Lights (other than dome) - (3) - Fuse on rear of switch is for dome lamp(s).

Maybe a fuse holder? My '59 had loads of them under the dash.

If there is one, it will be inline before the NSS or BU lamp switch.

I have the wiring schematic for a 57 but the backup lamp circuit is not shown. It will most likely be in the ELECTRICAL MANUAL.

Auto. My factory service manual has a bunch of wiring diagrams, and cut-aways in the back, but nothing either. I'll look for that second fuse on the headlight switch.

The BU LAMPS are controlled by a circuit breaker in the HDL SW.

The fuse/circuit breaker locations are shown in the SPECS section of the SHOP MANUAL.

Make sure your car HAS backup lights.
I went thru a similar exercise with my 56.
It didn't have the BU lights

Why would you be looking for the fuse if it didn't have backup lights ? Devil made me do it !

The '55 I have has backup light lenses and housings with bulbs in their sockets and wires that appear to be connected to something... but I discovered those wires don't go anywhere and there is no neutral safety/backup light switch or wiring for it anywhere in the front half of the car.
It's a project for after all the dash gauges are working.

KULTULZ, you were right. Had occasion to swap out the headlight switch, and guess what...the backup lights now work. I never would have guessed it. Thanks for the tip. I guess the moral of the story is watch out what wires you are sparking.

You are quite welcome and THANX for the update.

In the OWNERS MANUAL there is a page giving all the fuses and circuit breaker info. I have yet to scan and display.
