swaping 3.78 ring and pinion into 4.11 banjo

I have a matched set 3.78 ring and pinion in a banjo that I want to put in my 1935 banjo that presently has 4.11's. The bearing sizes for the pinion are different with the 4.11 being a larger diameter than the pinion bearings in the 3.78. I think this means that the 3.78's are from a 42-46? rear end. I think the splined shafts are the same diameter though. If I get the correct bearings I should be able to put the 3.78's into the 4.11 banjo, shouldn't I? Thank-you,.....Matt in Alameda

Matt, what is the spline count on the pinion of the 3.78 gear set vs. the spline count on the pinion of the 4.11 gear set?

The 4.11 is 10 splines, the 3.78 is 6 splines.........I want to use a 1940 drive shaft and torque tube ( 6 splines), because it is a LOT cheaper to shorten than a tubular torque tube which I need to do to put my Ford t-170 4 speed over drive tranny in....Matt in Alameda

I replaced my 4.11 with a 3.78 out of a 39 car, using a 35 banjo. The bearings I needed were Timken 22166 and the race (cup) was 22325

We have put later 3.54 gears onto 35 housings by by using the later centre housing and 35 outer housings and bearings.The inner bearing shoulders on the later CW are exactly the same distance fron centre as the earlier version.6 spline of course. Cheers.

We just finished a job for a customer swapping rear ends for his '34 pickup. The ten spline shaft is hollow and requires an adapter to match the six spline pinion. We chucked the driveshaft in our long bed lathe and cut off the end. Then we welded the adapter to the shaft while it is held in alignment in the lathe.

Hello Supereal, welcome to Fordbarn! I always like to read your very informative posts on the EFV-8C/A website. I am sure your knowledge on these early Fords will be very appreciated here on Fordbarn as well.

You can put the later 3.78 gears into an early housing with a bit of machining,
You need to machine the pinion down to fit inside the early housing,machine the bearing area down to the early size,make a spacer for the bearing nuts.
And it then will fit in,you then have to alter the driveshaft spline fro 10 to 6 spline.
Some one on the earlier barn did a more detailed how to on this,
