Default Splined steering shaft thread size

Do all early splined steering shafts have the same thread size where you attach the steering wheel?
I can't find my thread gage and the nut I thought was right won't screw on.
What is the proper thread size?
Thanks

I don't know the size, but it's the same thread as your rear axle nut.

It is a 5/8-18 thread. The nut is thinner than normal.
