Default Fuel Pump

I have a later model fuel pump from Bob Drakes all looks like it is compatible with my 33 except the flex fuel line bottoms out before sealing. Are there different fitting lengths on the later models ?.

Aftermarket stuff. someone here makes a ball check flex line too that I've thought about but didn't at this point.

Just how it is I'm guessing.... Some teflon tape 3 or 4 threads up from the seat works decent. I know tape has a bad rep. What ya going to do though...

Treads good? Is it leaking?

Tinker, the threads are all good pump & flex hose all new. The problem is the seat on the end of the hose fitting is not long enough to seal on the internal seat of the pump

Yep, got that. its not the end of the world. Maybe try a different flex or pump if it leaks.

If in fact it is the correct pump and it has the correct tapered seat to match the fitting, then removing material from the pump by what ever means necessary to allow the fitting to seat may be the answer.

As suggested by 51 Merc-CT. The seat taper is correct internally in the pump. Is either too deep to seat on fuel pipe taper or taper on pipe is too short. To remove a small section on the end face once you measure up and decide how much material to be removed.
The other option is to use the Stromberg fuel line end pieces as used for carb inlet.
They have a good long taper piece and work. I have used these as in this area i fit an inline filter just before fuel pump.
Measure the internal thread depth of an old pump and compare with a new pump maybe you will see a difference.

i have a drake pump on my 39 engine not yet in car. first thing i noticed was the pump inlet and exit were facing the wrong direction. had to remove top and turn it so lines would fit. that is when i found the bolts were METRIC. i will try my fuel line to see if fits like yours. Mark

What 51 Merc says, the inlet seat from the manufacturer is too deep....probably the same on the outlet.

I've had only one experience with a pump from Drake. Unfortunately, it was as yours... the flex line would not seat in the pump.

Thanks all good suggestions. 51Merk I did think of doing that and if I can't find a carby inlet adapter I will mill about 1/16" off the pump inlet face.

Found another issue. going through a check on fuel pump rod length & lift.
Motor is a 21 stud alloy heads & inlet manifold but the pump rod length is 8.87"
The green book says it should be 7 7/8". Is it possible I have the incorrect riser under the pump ??.

Your push rod is the correct one...use it. That Green Book baloney advises to use the shorter pushrod with aluminum manifold, but doesn't stipulate which model manifold. Trust me...the set up you have is indeed correct. Green book refers to 36-37 aluminum manifolds, which have the flange exactly 1" lower, but it doesn't actually stipulate.

Thanks for that Brian. I thought it a bit strange when everything was working the way it was. There is a fair bit of wear on both ends of the rod not sure if it is enough to create a problem with the hand prime pump I'm setting up for a spare. It seems to have too much free play before the lever moves the diaphragm ?.
Anyway I'll pay a visit to Lawrie (ex NZ) and pick his brain.
