Doing the brakes on my 28 Tudor, I got all new drums and two new hubs. When I went to install the rear hubs with new drums on the car, I realized that the race on the one old hub is BADLY worn. I do not believe that the race repair kits will fix the problem since there is a step between where the seal sits and where the bearing meets the race. I judge the wear to be almost 1/16". Question, is it possible to remove the new drum from the old hub and reuse it on the new hub? Or do I need to buy a new drum as well? Stupid me, I should have inspected the hub more closely before having a new drum swedged to it. Live and learn! Thanks in advance for your help.

You can drill out the studs and reuse the new hub with no problem. You can also mail it to one of the brake repair guys, such as Bert's or Mel Gross for repair.

Yes there is a tool that will cut the swedge then
The studs will come out. Good machine shop.

Tom and Dodge both mentioned the "drill" and "cut" of the existing studs. You DO NOT press them out. Pressing out will warp the new drum. You use a stud cutting tool or in my case use a 5/8" hole cutting say. Cut the swedged area on the stud then it will tap out putting no pressure on the drum.

Then a new hub can be swedged back onto your drum.. Once the swedging is done on the drum it needs to go back to the drum cutting machine for retruing the diameter of the drum - inside. Even a couple thousand inch of twisting or warping of the new drum during swedging can cause brake pedal to pulsate. I do this all the time. ken

Are the holes in the new drums chamfered?I thought they were,maybe not.If you cut the swedge off with a straight hole saw,like you would on an old drum,you will be cutting the meat out of the new drum too.I know they can be cut with an end mill that has been modified with a cut to match the angle of the chamfer.

The holes in the drum are chamfered. If you use the tool as is to remove the swedged over part of the stud you will also remove that chamfer in the drum. The studs will need to be drilled out. You would have to have the teeth ground and sharpened. Chances are they are tipped with carbide, little bit more than many home shops can do right.
