Liquid Soap to Clean Radiator??
There have been posts on cleaning radiaors using a liquid soap. I did a search, but can't find the posts that mentioned the brand name of the liquid soaps recommended.
My original radiator has a thin coating of slim. I can see it on the neck, plate, and tops of the tubes, and it also settles over the drain cock. I'm sure it's a combination of old grease and rust. I was going to remove the radiator this winter and remove at least one tank to rod it out, but this liquid soap might be enough to clean it for cooler running. What's the best liquid soap that won't harm the radiator or copper head gasket? Thanks |

Re: Liquid Soap to Clean Radiator??
I have used simple green and purple power.. Both mild as far as interactions with copper and brass, etc, but very good degreasers. 1-2 cups added to water only in the radiator, and run it up to operating temp for a while (might foam), and while hot and running, remove the bottom petcock over the lawn and run a stream of water from your garden hose at the same rate it is flowing out.. After about 5-7 minutes you will see clear water flowing and you should be able to look into your radiator and see a difference. Allow to fully drain and refill with your favorite anitfreeze/distilled water/ water-wetter etc

Re: Liquid Soap to Clean Radiator??
How about using one of those radiator flushes? Too harsh?
Thanks |

Re: Liquid Soap to Clean Radiator??
I've posted this before but, as it came from a vetern radiator rebuilder, I'll restate. Use two cups or so of liquid dishwasher detergent and clear water. Run it for a week or a hundred miles -- it won't hurt. Then drain it and pour it down a fence post -- no harmful stuff to make AlGore get his panties in a bunch. I did it a couple times and the "clear" water came out black the first time ... gray the second.
Oh, and the radiator guy said to backflush, as the oily stuff from greasing the water pump floats on water and deposits at the top -- not the bottom -- of the tubes and in the filler neck. |

Re: Liquid Soap to Clean Radiator??
I used OIL EATER from COSTCO which rinsed the grease out very well. Its also great to spray on the firewall or parts to clean and can be rinsed off whith a hose.

Re: Liquid Soap to Clean Radiator??
I used Cascade Dishwashing Gel in my radaitor - 'bout a week ago. 1/2 Cup in radiator with 2 1/2 gals water in it. Covered part of the radiator to get it up to 200 degrees. Ran it on highway at 40-45 mph for about 1/2 hour. Drained out a whole bunch of dark brown looking junk. Repeated the process an drained out some weak tea looking water. Inside of radiator is now clean as whistle. Truck (28 pickup) has a 160 degree thermostat in it. It normally runs at 160 so tho get it to run around 200 I had to do some experimenting with the size of the cover in front of the radiator. Ken

Re: Liquid Soap to Clean Radiator??
The Mack garage here used Cascade for years when they replaced blown out oil coolers. They would give it a couple of cycles, and then refill with anti-freeze.With some customers,(the mechanical minded ones) they would run a cycle of Cascade through it,then load it up with water and Cascade again. They would tell you to dump it out after a day or so of running. In the Model A I have used Lestoil.I dumped in the whole bottle. Then I forgot about it,and every time I took out the car I would leave a smell of Lestoil behind me.I did drain it after a couple of weeks, and the inside of the cooling system was spotless. It seemed to break the grease down enough so it just looked like dirty water. That engine had no rust, but a film of grease on every square inch of cooling system. The radiator came back to life too. Before if you put a hose in the top more water came out the top than out the lower outlet with the hose off.Works fine now.

Re: Liquid Soap to Clean Radiator??
I have done a lot of Mercedes headgaskets for oil in the coolant, the Mercedes cleaner looks just like cascade dishwasher granules ---most liquid soaps make bubbles, foam, but dishwasher soap is to clean in very hot water, not make bubbles

Re: Liquid Soap to Clean Radiator??
Looking at the posts for kitchen cleaners, got me wondering how a few tablespoons of TSP would work. Run it awhile, neutralize it with baking soda. Anyone tried that? Thoughts?

Re: Liquid Soap to Clean Radiator??
I used Cascade dishwashing liquid with good results. Unfortunately, the radiator started weeping at the upper seam as soon as I refilled it. Apparently it cleaned the cooling system so well that it disolved the stop-leak that was installed by a previous owner. Just something to consider.

Re: Liquid Soap to Clean Radiator??
Run your car with straight vinegar for about a week, or a hundred miles. It is a mild acid which will CLEAN ! It won't bother Al Gore either. You can nuetralize it with baking soda. Then, if you have the radiator off, you can force a pressure washer in and really get it clean !

Guys on the EV8 board swear by this. Vinegar, and it's inexpensive.
