C4 linkage compatability
I have a 70 C4 trans that I'm swapping into my 64 Comet along with a 66 6 bolt block. The Comet has a column shift, which I'm keeping; but the 66 was from a floor shift and shift linkage goes the other direction. Does anyone have specific knowledge if the linkage can be swapped between these two ? I know C4's didn't change that much over the years; but already there are differences in the trans mount, the vent tube, and the valve body. Hopefully before I tear it apart in an exercise in futility. I think I have the trans mount/vent tube figured out by swapping tailshafts, and drilling for a vent tube.

Re: C4 linkage compatability
My C4 has a floor shift I dont know what brand it is for sure. I was told by one guy it was probably a Lokar, but that I don't know. Lokar, I believe can help you with the kit that will fit your trans. I think. Al

Re: C4 linkage compatability
The C4 column shift cars have a lever that swings under the shifter shaft and the floor or console shift C4s have a lever that swings over the shifter shaft.
Some of the later C4's had the shifter both ways. I put one of those in my 56 Bird. The trans was a 1980 unit.

Re: C4 linkage compatability
You'll probably get it done with minimal changes, but here's the link to the lokar column shift pages. Might be some ideas just in the illustrations.

Find an independent trans. shop that's been in business for a while. They can probably fix you up with the right shift shaft from something in their used parts supply. It shouldn't be that hard to find, there were more column shift cars than the floor shifters. I needed a floor shifter arm once and all I could find then were what you need

Re: C4 linkage compatability
Got 'er done yesterday. I just sat the two trannys side by side on a bench and pulled them apart one piece at a time. The biggest difference was one was longer than the other, so I made up the space with a couple of washers on the kickdown part. And it took about 10 tries to get the kickdown linkage inside the case to line up correctly.
