Hard time removing steering wheel on 32
Is there a easy way to remove the steering wheeling wheel on a 32? Using a puller I don't want to mushroom the hollow shaft even if I have a nut loose on it. Not sure the best way.

Re: Hard time removing steering wheel on 32
Do you have the proper puller? If so, leave the nut on for most of the threads but "out" enough for the puller to seat against. Once the taper 'breaks", remove the puller and nut and you're good to go.

Re: Hard time removing steering wheel on 32
I’ve drilled and threaded two holes in the metal hub of the wheel to allow a “modern” style wheel puller to be used. Worked great.

This is the tool that you need, a Steering Wheel Puller for the Early Fords. This one is marked "Ford A-B-V8" manufactured by Winfield Tool Works. |

Here is my Steering Wheel Puller pulling a 1934 Ford Steering Wheel from the Column. I loaned it to my mate and he said that there is no way he could have removed this Steering Wheel without damage without using this tool. |

Here is another style of Steering Wheel Puller suitable for the Early Fords. This one is by Snap-On. A friend of mine owns this one. |

Here is a picture of the K R Wilson Steering Wheel Puller mentioned by Tim Ayers. It seems that there were quite a few different manufacturers offering a similar item. |

After seeing the picture of the puller we now know what to look for. At least I have never seen one until I Sean the picture here. Would not be hsrd to make one.

Re: Hard time removing steering wheel on 32
I have pulled my 32 wheel countless times. I use a Harbour Freight bearing separator under the wheel and a two jaw puller to to pull on it. No modifications to anything and never any damage. I do use a rag under the wheel.

Re: Hard time removing steering wheel on 32
Here is a steering wheel puller I found within the last year. And in of all places a house hold flea market. So keep your eyes open. You never know what will turn up where. It works great.

Re: Hard time removing steering wheel on 32
It is made in two pieces that bolt together. There is a hole in the middle and it is also tapered in.
They are used to pull bearings off shafts and axles and are very strong. I put it under the wheel and leave it loose. A rag cushions the wheel and the taper actually helps the fit. A regular puller is then used to remove the wheel. I have also used mine in rebuilding the banjo rear. I removed the piñon inner bearing with it Last edited by Andy; 02-14-2020 at 12:38 PM. |
