Question Is this a factory hole?

Just above the clutch, there is an oval hole with a small hole above and below it. I have several questions about it.
  • Is that a factory hole?
  • Is it supposed to be plugged or covered?
  • Is something missing on mine that should be in this hole?
  • If it's a factory hole, is it on all models from 28-31 on open and closed body cars?
It leads to the frame rail and engine compartment. All I can think is maybe a switch is supposed to go there. Perhaps wires, for cowl lamps? But if so, you would be stepping on them all the time.

Please help solve the mystery.

Thanks,
Kyle

Hi Kyle,

Very interesting....I have a similar hole in about the same location....I always thought that maybe someone had added a dimmer switch or maybe a floor mounted starter switch at one time.....

Don't think so. I think some one had a starter switch or dimmer switch there.

I think that at sometime in the past, someone added a foot operated headlight high/low switch.

It would be documented in the service bulletins or somewhere if it were an original hole for some purpose.

On my early 28 60-A fordor cowl with the vent I have the same holes as 1955cj5 and they appear factory. They are above where the left hand e brake would mount. My 12-28 60-B does not have any holes.

Thanks for the replies so far. When researching the answer myself, I ran across this service bulletin posted in another thread:

What was the proper way to get from behind the driver's side cowl panel to the other side of the firewall to connect to the light switch? My car doesn't have cowl lights, but is there another hole there somewhere too?

(I thought maybe the hole in my car was for something similar, but if there's a hole for cowl lights, that wouldn't make sense)

Thanks,
Kyle
