[QUOTE=Lawrie;1874066]I have both a 33 Fordor and a 34 3W
the 33 does heaps of miles, mostly towing our caravan,
see some of my older posts.
It has the stock wheels and tyres and mechanical brakes, it will run all day at 53 mph towing and both it(with out the caravan) and the 34 will run all day nicely at 55-60 mph, both have flathead Teds floaters and stop well,
the things that made them both easy and pleasurable to drive at speed on the hiway were good original shocks that I fixed and good steering with no play and the Teds floaters on the brakes. None have overdrives ,

Can wide 5's be used with 40's hydraulic brake setups any other way than using an adapter? Has something like this been done to preserve the outside look of the 36 wheels being used on a 40 axle?

'39s had the same hydraulic backing plate, shoes, etc. as the '40 and '41s. The '39 IS a wide five drum, as well as being identical to '37 and '38 drums. So, you can use any '37-'39 wide-five drum in conjunction with ANY '39-'48 hydraulic backing plate.....WITHOUT the use of any adapters! DD

I have 1940 hydraulic brakes on my '36 roadster. Very nice installation that if one didn't know better, would swear it's factory installed. And yes, wide five rims...no adapters.

OP was about 36 but here's my take on 33-34's .
The most I ever drove one was a 33 5w in 1974 and 1975 .
It was my only working car for 2 years .
Car was stock and was not safe above 60 mph .
Brakes and steering were both a little suspect .
Lights were not as bright as they could have been .
Car started good in winter but it was COLD .
I was a broke kid and the car didn't get the care it needed .

Had numerous one after it and some were better than others .

I was driving Mike Burches 34 Phaeton the other day and ran it to 75 mph .
Mike kept the car in good order and it behaved well .
Well the gas cap didn't but that was an easy fix .
Car has 3.54 gears so that part was no problem .

Probably won't do the 75mph very often though as I have had 33-34's do the " death wobble " before and that is not fun .

All that said I agree that 55-60 mph is plenty .

Should mention I live in a rural area .
If I lived in Minneapolis still it would be a VERY different deal .

qoute: It wasn't too bad most of the time, as I could pick up the "fog-line" at the edge of the road, but when one of those new cars with halogen headlights approached, they almost blinded me until I was past them. It was another "white-knuckle" session for that last half hour.

I knew what a fog line is.
Just try to convince anyone that you are not lawfully allowed to exceed the speed limit when passing.

Only ticket I've ever gotten in my entire life (and believe me...I've DESERVED a couple) was 54 years ago for exceeding the speed limit while passing....a whole 45 in a 35! That cop WAS NOT a chickenshit, but he sure had "hen-house" ways about him. DD

Leave Nancy and Chuck out of the discussion, please. Very inappropriate to
bring politics into this. A cheap and unnecessary shot

My '38 with mechanicals will keep up with normal freeway traffic and then some, but you've got the idiots on the road to watch out for also, so I tend to drive defensively in the center lane. This makes for good PR also, as I sure don't want to be thought of as being in the same class as the rice burner racers.

On the open road, and by that I mean flat out on the Nevada desert, I can enjoy the wind in my face a bit more, but I believe the condition of my steering is the major factor in my feeling safe at speed. I do run bias tires, and the handling is as good or better than any car I've ever driven. Bottom line (long winded), it's not how old your car is, it's how many idiots you have to avoid and how tightly maintained your car is.

I agree full heartedly with V8COOPMAN.
If we're dealing again with thin skin,.....well.....
Walk away, or get busy and calluse up.
Cutting firewood helps. Especially while not using gloves.
