My sentiment exactly. Being a former owner of a '41 Business Coupe, I say they do resemble old theater seats.

I've owned a '30 coupe for five decades, and only in the latter years, have I heard people refer to it as a 5 window. (?)

A lot of the old opera houses had the fold up seats in places so they could pack in a few more fans when the house was near full. I think a lot of folks just use the opera term since they didn't know what else to call a fold up seat. There were aftermarket kits for traveling sales men to add shelves behind the seat in some of the popular cars of the era so some business coupes likely had the fold up seats removed for stuff like that. Farmers purchased aftermarket bed kits to install in the coupes to make them into a sort of pickup configuration. The guys from the southern pacific regions of Australia and New Zealand could call that a coupe ute.

Late-30s MoPar coupes didn't have jump seats but came from the factory with behind-the-seat shelves on the driver's side as standard equipment - the spare tire was behind the seat on the passenger side. Coupe-pickups were factory-made by Chevrolet from 1936-42 - they came with a deck lid which could be installed in place of the bed to convert the car to a regular coupe.

Terraplane made a coupe-pickup with a bed that slid into the trunk like a dresser drawer.

Ok - so Ford never used the term "opera coupe" as a model designation . However , on pg. 153 of the V8 Album by the EFV8CA it says that the business coupe had two folding "opera seats" behind the front seat . That may explain how the term originated from ? This is a great thread ! I think . - F F
