Default Axle seal again

I think I have everything figured out for repair to my Roadster except how to install the inner seal in the housing. Ford Service Bulletin shows special tool to install the seal. How do I install using regular tools? The drum bearing is an easy change out. Thanks for any help. BW

I used a 3 foot piece of threaded rod, some washers and nuts to make a long seal driver.

Not to plug Model A Times, but I understand that they ran a multi-issue piece on rearend (see Barry, you don't have to say ASS in front of the children) rebuilding this year. I'm hoping for a pass-along from one of my club members. If it helps me with the Prussian "Blues" then I may have to reup my subscription.

Bruce - If I remember right, the Model A Times differential article was a reprint of Tom Endy's. It is available at this web site:

www.ocmafc.org/

Click on "Tech Articles", and then click "Differential Seminar". You will get all you ever wanted to know about rebuilding rear-ends, including installing the inner seal.

I hope it helps.

I just used a piece of pipe with a suitable size washer welded on the end, about 1/2" back from the end so it passes through the seal. Knocked mine in with this and a rubber hammer.

I can see why it is necessary to allow a length of the seating tool to "center" the seal in the housing. Thanks for all the input. I will clean everything up and order parts. Got all of it broken down this afternoon. Thanks for all the help from Ford Barn. I have Les Andrews' book for reference, but little "tips" are most helpful. This is a great forum! Lots of info and good people! BW

I bought the same tool from one of the vendors. Make the job very easy.

Make sure you spend the time to clean the inside of the axle housings. I used a round toilet brush and lacquer thinner. Kerosene just wasn't strong enough. I used a rubber plug for the narrow end from Ace Hardware, and a plug for the grease zerk hole, and let the full housing soak. I would follow with simple green before painting the exterior. Clean is good.

I bought one of the insertion tools from a vendor. It was a 1/2" female pipe coupler welded inside a washer of appropriate inside and outside diameter. Easy to make.

Default Re: Axle seal again - revisited

Got parts to reassemble the right rear axle of my 1928 Roadster. Some consternation as to how to put back together. Inner axle seal does not have a spring behind the rubber. There is some wear on the axle where the seal would ride if the seal was worn out. You can feel the ridges from old seal wear as it eroded to the spring. This new seal is a "made in "Taiwan" part from a source / parts provider with no spring behind the rubber. All axle seals I have looked at for years have the spring to keep the rubber seal intact. Don't want to reassemble and have the same problems exhibit themselves after all this work. Who makes the best inner axle seal to use? Thanks, BW
