Default Removing front brake adjuster

My friend asked me to post the following regarding his '36 Phaeton- I am having a problem replacing the front mechanical brake adjuster. I did the left side, however the right adjuster unscrews then jams, There is a dust cover that must be removed and the adjuster is removed at that point. Can't get it to unscrew. All advice is appreciated. Stan.

I sent a note to Ryan asking for this to be moved to Early V8

If the two side parts, that engage at top of shoes are both removed, he should screw the adjuster in until it pops the dust cover out/off. This offers some resistance, but it will eventually pop the cover out. Then screw the adjuster in a little further (may require long nose pliers to grip and turn square end) and adjuster will come out where dust cover was located. Have done this many times when working on 35/36 mechanical brakes.

It's possible Ted. I've taken some pretty rusted backing plate assemblies apart and don't recall having any so rusted that I couldn't turn the adjuster completely out.
Maybe Stan will get back with more details, and let us know what happened.

Stan, if the '36 is the same as Model A then you can turn the adjusting wedge all the way in and it should pop off the dust cap. Are you saying the adjusting wedge is frozen. If so I would keep soaking it with penetrating oil and keep moving it in and out. By the way I'm in G. C., if you PM me, perhaps I can take a look at it for you. I just did a complete brake job on a Model A.

The same type adjuster and inner dust cap was on Fords all the way through 1938. Initial installation of the adjuster requires that it be screwed in from the inside, after which the dust cover is installed, press fit. Disassembly in reverse order. Don't get in a hurry and damage the dust cap with pliers, it will pop out undamaged.
