Default new engine

If you guys were to get a new engine where would you go? I want a new engine for my coupe but I don't want to give away the engine currently in the car. I want to use it as a self educational tool so I can learn more about working on the little beast.

Thanks for any info you guys can provide

Buy a junk engine stuck pistons preferred. tear it down and get familiar. Best if it has starter, Generator, water pump, flywheel and clutch. It's all parts for the shelf. Try not to go over $200.00 Nice if no cracks but there is never a guarantee.

It can, but I'd like a new one to put in the car while I'm rebuilding the current one. That way I have as little down time with the car as possible.

That is what I did with my car. I pulled the motor and put another one in while I rebuilt the old one. I was still able to drive the car while I work on it.

Call the major rebuilders like snyders, A E R Berts they should be able to sell you a new engine out right and just charge you a core charge for not sending in your old engine.
You can then learn on the old engine.

CB919ER:
Over the past 30 plus years I have had 6 engines completely rebuilt - 2 each by three different rebuilders. AER in Skokie, IL when I lived there, Ron Miller in Shandon, OH and James Rogers in Asheville, NC. All of them did a good job. Call or PM me if you would like to discuss which of them or other that I would choose for my next engine. I helped you get your car running earlier this year in Seymour, TN. Good rebuildable engines are getting hard to find and the price for cores is going up.

Is the serial number that the car is registered with get restamped on a rebuilt engine or is this not an issue?

I have seen Ron Kelley and his engines at Chickasha and would like one but for his good stuff you really have to pay. If you want to keep the price below $1K per cylinder one needs to look elsewhere.

This is a question that should be asked of your state's DMV. The last I checked (many years ago) California would not register a car by the engine number, they would insist on using the number stamped into the frame by the manufacturer or attach one of their tags to the door jam.

My car is already registered. I had a title and paperwork so I went into the DMV and got a new title and registration. They never even looked at the car.

If a police officer wanted to compare the number on your car to the number on your car's registration can you show them the number on the car? If you were in an accident could you show the insurance adjuster the number on the car that matches the number of the car they insured? If the numbers don't match the police could impound the car or the insurance company could refuse to pay the claim. Of course these are worst case scenarios but why take chances?

That's a good point, I just checked my engine number against my insurance paper, they don't match. When I get time I'll pull the floor up and check the number on the frame.

Got some bad news. Checking the serial number stamped into the Model A frame requires lifting the body. Check the archives for details.

Stamp the engine numbers on STEEL, make a rubbed tracing of it & say, "YEP, that's the number on the frame, saw it with my OWN Eyes"!

Sounds like you'll be paying for 2 engines. One for temporary and one for the road when all is done. That's about the price of another car with a good running engine. What to do?

If you say "YEP, that's the number on the frame, saw it with my OWN Eyes" to a California DMV person they will probably have you put it on a special form called "A Statement of Facts". The form cautions that making a false statement is perjury. If they still want to see it you have just opened a brand new can of worms

When I wrecked my A , the first thing the insurance agent did was verify the number matched his records.

In Canada there is only a number on the left side of the block . Nothing on the frame or on the cowel .

Most likely they will refer you to the CHP. That is never a good thing.

My Town Sedan is registered in California by the engine number. When I insured it (AAA) the agent came to my house (he also wanted to "see" my garage)to get the number off of the engine so it is also insured under the engine number. I have no idea what my frame number is.

The engine number does fall into the correct time period, August 1930.

I obtained a new engine from Schwalm's Babbitted Bearings in Strasburg, PA and I am very happy. Ora Landis does an outstanding job with Model A engines!

I bought my restored Model A Town Sedan from a gentleman in upstate New York. During the restoration process, he made a tracing of the number on the frame, which he gave me when I bought the car, and it does also match the engine number. When I registered the car in California, I used AAA, and took along that tracing to show the agent whom registered my car, which definitely helped.

Yep, I took pictures of the number and also tracings when I applied, and they used both for the records.

What is the average price for a complete rebuild Model A engine?
I supply a good core engine (no cracks, etc.) 3K, more?
Thanks

Jim off hand I'd guess about $4,000. Lay aside 4500 to be sure. I think that price there abouts includes a balancing job also.

Agree...$4,500 for a nicely rebuilt Model A Engine. Almost everyone uses adjustable valves these days. Ernie in Arizona.

We've got one for $3800, Complete, Never run, built by a recognized local builder. It's going to Hersey soon. Will start it up for you if you say when you want to see it. Just say the word!
