1931 S/W Fordor Sedan Rear Crossmember
Should a 1931 S/W Fordor Sedan have a metal hump over the Rear Crossmember/spring as part of the floor? It would be under the rear seat cushion.

I just replaced one and took the stitches out of the original to provide a pattern for making the new. The original material was heavy canvas on the bottom side with a layer of upholstery material (I think seat cover...it had a "pin stripe" pattern). The two layers were held together with a thin layer of tar or black adhesive. The adhesive or tar was so thin it looked as if it had been sprayed on one of the surfaces.
Held in place with thin metal strips sewn into the cover. Short "wood screws" through the thin metal strips and into the metal floor pan secured the assembly. I made mine from two layers of heavy canvas and then sealed the canvas with a melted mixture of 75% bees wax and 25% paraffin wax. Good Day! |

My late '31 is metal attached with similar screws,perhaps aftermarket. Had an early 160B with fabric like the others posted.

Thank you all for the replies. Based on your replies, I found that Bratton's Antique Auto Parts sells a Rear Floor Pan Spring Hump Cover (made from roof material) p/n 35970 and Rear Floor Pan Spring Hump Straps (metal) p/n 35980 for the 1931 Town Sedan. Thanks again.

Made my own straps too, used scrap metal that I had sitting around.
cost for me to install the spring cover $0.00. Roof material - free Straps - free Screws - free I don't count my labor because I like working on it so much.

Is that cover actually made from 5 pieces of fabric stitched together?
I never got around to replacing mine, and last winter the opening provided an entry point for mice, who set up a breeding operation behind the back seat. So I need to make one and install it ASAP! Doug Quote:

When I recently pulled the rear seat of my 160B I noticed the rear spring was covered with a small braided rug (I didn't think it was original as it had no "Ford" script on it. I looked for the metal cover like my Tudor has - anyhow found out that Ford made the 160 with a piece of canvas covering the hole heal in place with some 1/2" wide 12 guage straps. I drilled out the rusted screws, used 3/4" wide 1/8" thick flat stock steel and a piece of inner tube.

I used an old tyre inner tube as it has the correct curveature. 19" tube by memory. Keeps water out. Dave
