Default F1 axle shafts

I am restoring a set of axle shafts to slide into a Dana 44, new bearings/derusting/speedi sleeves to repair a slight groove. While I have them clean and easy to get to, should I paint the unmachined section of the shaft. I was thinking a light coat of glyptal but wanted to get the expert opinions.

Although I'm not by any means an expert, on every diff I've ever pulled apart, all interior components are coated in axle lube, which precludes said components from rusting. A coat of glyptal certainly wouldn't hurt, but I think is totally unnecessary.
