Default fuel gage

hi guys. I had my starter motor rebuilt. put new #1 gage cables at all ground points. clean, brite and tight. starts up like never before in my ownership. AND, the fuel gage goes to full.( tank is full ). Bet then gage drops to empty. The gage never even worked before. do you think it is opening up as it gets hot? I mean the sending unit internal wire. Any thoughts?

oldschool, I did as you suggested in trying to get the gauge to work when I first got the coupe. The float is good, I put a ground wire on the sender, getting power to sender and gauge. I think when I put all new ground cables on, I made it work. I think when I turn the key on, the windings in the sender open when they heat up, interrupting electric flow.Any electrical gurus out there ever had this happen? Thanks, Dick.

More: This for a 49-51 Merc 6V, but the early Fords work on the same principle.

19fordy, thanks for the info and effort in your reply. I will see what I can do, alltho I don't have any replacement units to try I all with, heck, it could be a shorted wire along the frame rail. Dick from Delaware.

The senders can lose continuity or come out of adjustment. The points mechanisms often require service and calibration to spec.
