Default Powermaster PowerMax Starter 9002

Has anyone installed one of these on a 1955 V8 Fordomatic? Having trouble getting it to engage with the flywheel...

I looked at your starter on Summit. If yours actually looks like the one shown, it might be for a manual transmission application. The Fordomatic ring gear is an integral part of the torque converter. When the starter is engaged, the bendix retracts to engage the ring gear, just the opposite of most applications in which the bendix is extended to engage the ring gear on the flywheel. If you still have your original starter, I would compare them. The Powermax mini-starter does not look anything like my Fordomatic starter.

By the way, you don't have to replace the starter when converting 6-volt to 12.

Starters in '55 for V8's were the same for manual and auto transmissions.

Since the gear on the bendix drive engages the ring gear from the rear, do the rear edges of the teeth on the ring gear have a slight bevel to them? to help the gears mesh. But not on the front edge of the ring gear teeth?
I don't have a spare one here to look at.

IF so... this could make engaging the ring gear teeth from the front, with a different style starter, a bit more difficult.

the OP has messaged a few times privately on his phone and yes, he did get this done and working the way it should. Hopefully he will have time to come back and give us an update.
