I like the first part of 1932 V-8's answer and I will plan on using it. Giving them some very low number and saying at that price it is too much fun to drive to sell is a clever answer.

I had someone offer me 2 Corvette project cars. I said, "A Corvette, they're junk plastic cars". He replied, "I know".

I remember the old commercial from years ago, where an old timer is bringing his black Model A into a muffler shop, his memorable quote from the ad was, "I'ld never sell Annabelle".
God that's YEARS ago!!!

I can remember the unimportant things in life, like my ex-wife's birthday!

I always thank them for their interest and leave after giving them a few minutes. No need for me to be a jerk just because they are.

CC33-

I remember the commercial, too! As I recall, it was part of a Midas advertisement of a Life-Time warranty for their mufflers (circa 1960.) What I find baffling is I can remember that but can't remember where I put my reading glasses five minutes ago.....

Probably the thing I find most annoying about owning an antique vehicle
is the unsolicited offer to buy my car.
I usually respond with an outrageously high price. This cools them down a bit.
When I collected Cadillacs this happened often.

I like that one too!

Living in a downtown metro area you get all sorts of different reactions. Some very nice and some down right rude.

Once a waitress working at a restaurant, ran outside the restaurant and yelled "I love your car!" I thought that was nice.

I will say I have stopped driving it to the hardware store. Everytime I came out, I would find someone pawing on it. One guy was halfway in the window going for the pedals I assumed, as he told me he needed pedals like I have. . Talking to one admirer, I had mentioned something that I need to fix, he said he had noticed that. Well the only way you would know that is if you had been in the car. That is only the guys that I had caught, hard to say how many people have sat in the car when I wasn't looking.

Always polite, but have a few instances were dishing it back would have been justified.

Found the commercial. But his memorable line isn't mentioned in this version.

A while back,as I was gassing up the coupe,a guy approached me and asked how much I'd take for the car(I had no intention of selling it).I said,"Make me an offer. But if it's not enough,it's not for sale". We stood there staring at each other for a few seconds. Then we both smiled at each other and went our separate ways.

I had a woman approach me and ask where I got my car and whether they had any more like it.

A "no thankyou, not interested in selling"..works for me.
If the supposed buyer persists, then he is being rude/disrespectful.

I like the ones even better that ask how much you paid for it. I tell them I found it the free ads. They look at you kinda puzzled.

Your lucky he only asked how much. In my neighborhood you might run into someone that wouldn't even bother to ask how much. They pull a gun and take it from you.

I'm more wary of strangers now after losing a step son over an old Chevy Cavalier. The kid that shot him to steal his car was just plain nuts. I hope ya'll live in safer neighborhoods.

First of all as a fellow woodie owner, for this guy to offer you ten grand for your 1940 woodie, tells me he doesn't have a clue what these cars are worth. There isn't a car show we go to that someone offers to buy our car. I just humor people when they ask me to sell my car and engage them in conversation. My wife however gives them a crazy figure and they just mumble something to themselves and walk away! Enjoy your woodie!

Bingo.

Not sure how this was a situation of disrespect to you or your car. There's absolutely no reason to get worked up about it.

The guy could've simply liked your car, yet had no idea what the value is of a 1940 Ford XYZ. Not every one is worth $308k. Heck, I've seen cars that I think look neat and would be fun to own, but have no idea what the value would be on them, and I'm a car guy.

A simple "Sorry, it's not for sale" or giving some unrealistic number, and then leaving gets the point across.

I have that problem with my 32 3 window and when I tell them what I would take for the old car they usually leave with a question still on there face. Count your blessings. Thanks All

The popular conception is that anything is for sale at the right price. That may be true at an auction or such, but there are things that I would NEVER sale. Nevertheless, I enjoy the attention my cars bring.

A few times when I've been asked "Is it for sale" I've replied "But what will I drive?" That usually kills the conversation.

I don't think people mean to be rude, some are not as graceful or competant with verbal expression as we would like. Chin up and keep smiling.

I had an interesting one the other day. A guy asks me what year my truck is (standard question) so I say 49 and then his wife says , how much you want for it. So I said politely, its not for sale and continued talking to the husband. She proceeds to ask 3 more times "how much do I want to sell it for?" So I say " ITS NOT FOR SALE" to which she responds "what would you sell it for?". I finally say " this is my baby and I can't sell it" .Her response "people sell their babies all the time". So I say "Not around here they don't" and drive off. I am flattered when someone offers to buy my car but they can be obnoxious sometimes.
