Default 1939 Door Rear latch

I have a door latch that has been notched & I'm sure it wasn't that way originally. Does anyone know why it was notched?

A a lot of door latches were modified when replacements became hard to find. Same is true for window regulators. Both were subjected to damage from rainwater that entered the door from rain.
