Safer Power Tools
My father, a carpenter, has plenty of stories of having to wander job sites looking for the severed remains of digits based on improper power tool use. So every since I was old enough to hold a saw, I've had the mantra "a blade does not discriminate" drilled into my head.
I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that if you are on this website, you're familiar with power tools and the safety issues that come along with them. So, I don't think it is too far of a stretch to think that this technology is of interest to the people on this forum... http://www.buzzfeed.com/lenkendall/n...nger-again-wh6 Still, never in a million years would I do what that guy does. -Tim |

He is moving his finger very slow to just touch it --with a wet hand, I would think that in a "real life" use that 5 or 6 teeth at least would take a pretty good bite before the blade stopped.

Re: Safer Power Tools
Looks like you have to remember to ground yourself to the table to get it to work. Anything mechanical can fail. Must be the same guy that tested the shark suit. Here's your sign!

Re: Safer Power Tools
That saw has been on the market for several years. It is pricey, but a lot cheaper than trying to reattach fingers. It was on display at either the WoodCraft store, or Rockler in Minneapolis can not remember which. Really a nicely constructed saw and made in USA if I remember correctly. You do not have to be grounded to saw as it detects change in capacitance and when it fires forces the aluminum stop directly into the blade. Ruins the blade and have to replace the mechanism with the aluminum stop and attached electronics. Google Saw Stop for more info.

You cannot replace skill with a machine that will most likely not hold up under most construction conditions (damp, dusty, dirty). I'd bet as soon as that thing gets a fine coating of dust on it it'll lock up by accident. I'm sure many many people here know how tools laying around in the shop often get a fine coating of metallic dust on them from other stuff going on. Doesn't sound like that saw would like that. Not the blade specifically because thats obviously metal, but what about any RF insulators in it. Eh who knows I'll stick with the idea of teaching people the proper use of tools. By the way, why wasn't he using a push stick with that hot dog. |

Re: Safer Power Tools
We have one of those where I work. It will just shut off if the wood is wet. Nobody has had an opportunity to put it to the test. Pretty nice saw. Very good customer service. No complaints about it.

Re: Safer Power Tools
I don't believe it works by completing a circuit but rather by induction(?). Like touch lamps. here's the link to the site http://www.sawstop.com/how-it-works/
And a review of the saw here: http://www.finewoodworking.com/ToolG....aspx?id=30455 The cpa is considering a law mandating the saw stop. http://www.finewoodworking.com/item/...dicts/page/all Other manufacturers don't like it because the patent is so general that they can't duplicate the product, and would have to license it from the patent holder adding several hundred dollars to the price of the table saw. What price safety? How to promote invention with out patent rights? what's this got to do with Model A's?...fwiw,jm |
