Cool Question about rear Housing Bearing

I'm in the middle of rebuilding the rear axle for my 28. I ordered four new bearings 2 for the pinion and two for the Housings. The two for the pinion fit just fine but the two for the housing are too small. Almost 3/8". Any ideas?

Ether they just sent the wrong ones or, the early 28 had a different pinion/driveshaft assemble. The inner diameter of the bearing is smaller, if this is where the problem is. Maybe somewhere along the line the pinion and driveshaft were changed to the later style.

The Bearing for the Housing is #334.

The pinion is correct. #28156.

Hi Tom: Would you have a picture of the race for axle housing. Maybe that's the difference. That the race is quite large.

Thanks: John P.

I'm not Tom but this is what you should have. The Timken part number for the axle housing race is 28137, (Bratton's 6090). The Timken part number for the bearing is 28156, (Bratton's 6070). I wouldn't use anything but Timken, the chinese made bearings don't fit.

Attached are some photos of the axle housing race. If you have a shop press the easy way to install them is to set the banjo on the press rails and set the axle housing down inside it. I makes for a sturdy platform. It is prudent to check with a dental mirror that the race is seated against the stop all the way around.

Thanks for all of your input guys. This is a big help. I'm lucky because a friend of mine is a transmission and rear axle tech on antique cars. (That's all they do.) He's going to do the assembly for me. I get to be the assistant and I know he'll remind me to stick with Metal Fabrication!!!JP
