I created an album, "First pictures of Roadster", that I took for insurance purposes. It is public so anyone can open it. Thank you for that suggestion. Russ |

Russochiolo, here are pictures of the valance from a Victoria. It is, I believe, unique to the Victoria, certainly different from those of the Deluxe Phaeton and the A400 Convertible Sedan. The one on your roadster looks similar to the Victoria valance, at least from the photos Mike posted. Like others have said, the roadster didn't originally come with a valance, but it looks good on your car.

Vern, thanks. I think this discussion is on it's "last legs".
Later this morning I'll be at my friends and check his original Vickie. I am inclined to go along with your (and others) thinking that this was added by an unknown previous owner and not "factory", standard or option, when someone asks about it. I often get questions from other 40 B Dlx caretakers whose cars don't have a valance. Also, thanks to all of those that chimed in on this subject. Russ |

It looks as though the rear sub-frame (Snyder's A-165-AB)was replaced with a valance from a Victoria at some point in this roadster's life. Thanks for the responses.......now to find out if anyone knows more about this A. Russ |

Re: Rear Valence on 1931 40-B Dlx Roadster
Fellow Barners,
Yesterday I was given 3 crates of old Restorer magazines. While going through some of them this afternoon, I came across Vol. 35, Issue 4, Nov/Dec '90. Page 11 has photos of a '31 Three Window Coupe owned by Sam Bergman that show a valance that is strikingly similar to the one my early '31 roadster. While under the A recently, I noticed that the valance is actually two pieces. This gives credence to Bill Williamson's earlier post suggesting that the valance is/was an aftermarket accessory. Two pieces would be easier/cheaper to ship. Any further thoughts from Barners will be appreciated. Thanks, Russ. |

Re: Rear Valence on 1931 40-B Dlx Roadster
In the '50's we built valences from 3 pieces of flat sheet metal, exhaust tubing to form the lower rolled edge, & sections from old headlight shells, to form the curved corners. Part of head light shells, also built NIFTY hood scoops & blisters.

Re: Rear Valence on 1931 40-B Dlx Roadster
The Victoria valance doesn't have the belt rail up the sides as in his roadster valance. I also noticed the valance on a 180A has notches for the clearance of the bumper brackets so his valance is narrower. I see the rear tire carrier has been lowered. I wonder what reinforcement was added to the valance to support the lower two bolts The rear bumpers have also been adjusted down to allow space for the valance to fit.
I too like it. Wonder if someone got the idea from the next generation of roadsters that used it to hide the gas tank. Last edited by foxfire42; 07-11-2016 at 03:27 PM. |

Re: Rear Valence on 1931 40-B Dlx Roadster
foxfire42,
I just got under.......the lower 2 bolts go through the valance and into the body crossmember. The valance itself is made up of 2 halves that slip over the body crossmember and is joined in the center with three bolts with square nuts on the underside. The dog is askin' for his dinner.......gotta go. I'll get my camera out and see if'n I can get some pictures to post. Thanks for your observations. Russ |

I got some pictures added to my public albums. I hope they will give a better idea of the way in which the valance is attached. I don't believe that the spare tire mount has been lowered as it bolts through the valance and into the body crossmember. I have been wrong before and take no offense when other opinions are expressed. Russ |

Re: Rear Valence on 1931 40-B Dlx Roadster
I missed it the first time. The valance covers the rear sub frame that ties the two sub rails together.
