Coil.coil.coil !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First thing Monday morning . Customer says engine has ran pooorly "every since" the addition of a electronic control module and new coil.....Engine has been rebuilt played with timing and vacuum brake but no improvement...
Intial inspection shows .6 ohm Pertronixs Flamethrower coil and very loose rotor ( rotor to shaft). Doing the math shows .6 ohm divided into 7.2 volts would be 12 amps! The petronixs doesnt like to see over 8 amps. You cant run these hi-po coils on these old cars !!!!!! |

SMELL TEST !!
WOW one of the first smells we remember is that of a burned up electrical motor ( maybe even a train set) whatever its just a smell that most have experienced ! This morning the first two boxes i opened had that smell !! Further checking was two very low resistance coils used with electronic ignitions! |

To eliminate that smell just have Skip rebuild a stock Ford coil. G.M.

No intent of pertronixs being bad ( we sell pertronixs) the point was that the incorrect coil was being used . Very low ohms creating too many amps. Nice flatty by the way!!!! |

Re: Coil.coil.coil !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A little off topic/sorta, but I'm working on a Hyster forklift, Mazda 4 cyl, propane ,
Short history, good compression, timing good, fuel delivery good. Will not start, spark was weak/ intermittent. New points, condenser, cap, rotor, wires, coil, and resistor. Still weak & intermittent , my next best guess is either I got a junk condenser, or possibly the cap/rotor combo is wrong and there is too much gap for spark to jump. What say you? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ralph |

Re: Coil.coil.coil !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thought about that, the condenser is mounted externally on the dist. I will check that and the engine ground when I go back to it.
Just want to get some ideas, I've delt with plenty of points systems, and never had this issue. Of course it's propane as well, which I've done some work on these systems, but I am certainly no expert on them. But I'm 99.9% sure it's not a fuel issue. Why? Because it has all new fuel parts in it. And I dumped a little gas in it and not even a pop. |

They made my coils for some time and have been in business since 1948, another example of off shore work closing them down... |
