Default 1935 Ford Transmission

Hi,

If anyone knows, how do I get the front gear off of the main shaft on a 1935 transmission? Also, is there supposed to be a seal where the front spline comes out of the transmission before it goes out into the throw out bearing? Thanks in advance for any help. Bill

I will assume you mean the input shaft that you are trying to remove? If so you must pull the counter shaft out of the cluster gear and let it drop into the bottom of the trans case then it will come out of the case, probably just a type of slinger--later trans had a seal in the throw out bearing support housing

I believe he's talking about removing the 2nd gear from the main shaft. On all 32-38 Ford 3 speed trannies, 2nd gear is locked onto the shaft by a hidden spring, plunger, and lock key. You must depress the plunger thru a small hole in 2nd gear while moving the key. It's a bit complicated to explain. I put all this with pics in our trans rebuild book, so you might want to get a copy of the book.

The book helped this first timer do a complete rebuild on my own trans:
