My odd speedometer??
Anyone recognize this speedometer from my 1949 F6? It's different than my other F6, and wonder why.

Re: My odd speedometer??
I've never seen one like that. I've see the different colors (mostly in F5 and F6) for shift ranges but never seen the wording for what gear to shift into. Do you think the guy was confused about what gear to shift into and added the stickers?

Re: My odd speedometer??
that is factory for the F6 and maybe the other F6 has a gauge cluster from a F1-3 that was installed sometime in the last 61 years as a replacement. check and see if it's being held in by bailing wire as most were farm trucks.

Re: My odd speedometer??
Yeah, I have two F-6s. Both have the same speedos.
Your's looks like it could use a little bondo, Havi. |

Re: My odd speedometer??
I pulled one out of a 48 f5 and it looked the same as yours.

Re: My odd speedometer??
This one has the synchro silent 4sp. My dumptruck F6 has the F1 style then. But it also only has a single speed rear axle.
Thanks for the replies.

Re: My odd speedometer??
Not to stray too far off, but I just pulled the big 6 and synchro 4sp. from this donor truck. I had to remove them to make way for removing the speedometer.

Re: My odd speedometer??
Not really, Jerry, but I just pulled them and set them in my garage for keeping, along with some other parts, including the speedometer. This is just a temporary donor truck for parts.

Re: My odd speedometer??
Can you post pictures of the transmission with dimensions (tape measure)? I would like to know if one of these can be put into an F-2 and if so what is involved. Also, what is the spline count of the output shaft?
Thanks. |

Re: My odd speedometer??
Give me a couple days, and I'll do what I can. I have an F2 crossmember to compare to the F6 crossmember with, and the trans has the parking brake on the back, so not sure on the spline count as of yet.
EDIT: At some point that I separate the trans from the I6, I hope to get the bellhousing to trans and input shaft measurements, since I have a few T18/NP435's to go with for comparison. Maybe it's been figured out before, but I have nothing better to do, lol.

Re: My odd speedometer??
Well I went out back and really looked. F6, F5 and F4 all have speedo like that... slight variation on label size. All non-syncro.

Re: My odd speedometer??
Thanks, Frank. As was suggested, my other F6 might have been swapped out.

Re: My odd speedometer??
Well I didn't get the trans separated yet, but I measured the F2 and F6 crossmembers. I could explain all of what I measured, but I'll sum it up as this. The T98 was optional for the F4, F5, and standard behind the big 6 in the F6. Crossmembers between these and F2/3 are different, but only in height due to frame height, but the engine perches and cab still sit on the top equally (F6 c-memb drops lower). The trans mount that holds the speedo cable and 5 bolts on the back of the trans appears to be the same between my F2 crashbox 4sp. and the T98, except in mounting height (the cast ears are different, such as the F1 sits nearly even with the output shaft). So I think by using the F2 transmount bolted to the T98, it would fit in the F2. Someone else may want to chime in if they know for sure.
EDIT: At some point that I remove the trans mount parts from each trans, I can then compare them side by side.

Re: My odd speedometer??
Thanks! Is the T98 any longer (bellhousing flange to transmission mount flange) than the T9? I thought it was since the crash-box is very short for a 4 speed.

Re: My odd speedometer??
Roughly 6.5" from where the hogshead bolts to the block, to where the bell bolts to the trans-case.

Re: My odd speedometer??
Oops! I should have been more clear. I meant to ask what the length was from the front flange where the bell bolts on to the back face where the trans mount bolts on. Also I assumed that both transmissions would share the bell and hogshead. Am I correct? Thanks for all your measuring so far.

Re: My odd speedometer??
I've got about 11.5" from center of tranny mount bolt hole to front face of case where the bell bolts on. Then the bell is roughly 3" long, and then the hogshead.
