Question Stroke on Master Cylinders

Hi Guys, I need to know the stroke travel on both a '48 Ford master cylinder and a 65 Mustang dual master cylinder? I need the stroke dimensions for a project on my '35 Doesn't seem to be in the details given on sites for buying?

Anthony...I don't have the dimensions you asked for, but you also need to be aware that cylinder diameter CHANGES (even in 1/16" diameter increments) can drastically affect the total function of your brake system. Going SMALLER diameter on a M/C will make it easier to push on the pedal, BUT....the stroke will also need to be LONGER to displace the same VOLUME of fluid as before.

Inversely, going LARGER on the M/C diameter will flow more fluid per stroke distance, but the pedal will become hard as hell to push. DD

Thx DD, I realize that. This will be something for now & later incase I decide to change again. Have a design that I’m trying accommodate a ‘48 Ford MC for use now w ‘48 ford brakes all around. Will decide later to go w either Bendix type on front or possible discs. W Bendix ‘48 MC will work fine but if I go w discs I’ll néed the Mustang duel MC w portioning valve. Want to try to modify bracket to use either.

Anthony...For what it's worth, DON'T go that disc route. If you will, take three or four minutes and read the post I just made on another thread. Click the link below and read POST #3. DD

JFYI, the first Mustang dual master cylinder was 1967.

All good DD, actually think I was on board w the Bendix Lincoln Fronts & know the ‘48 MC is adequate for but even w those thinking maybe for safety a dual MC gotta b good! Better to have capability & not use than have to pull out & refab later. Ur post was a good read & do agree.

Believe he is correct on the dual master cylinder first being used in 67 from the factory.

Looks like a neat little package if I can get it to fit. The strok concerns me. If much longer than the ‘48 MC will b tough.

Plus, don't forget that if you lose one side of the system, the M/C must stroke longer than normal to function in emergency mode. DD

Good stuff Brian & DD, took a while to read all & absorb. Think I’ve understood. In a system w a specific size or sizes ( some diff front to rear) wheel cyl’s, using a specific single stage Master cyl that works as should, to maintain good pedal & stopping when changing to dual MC, the new MC needs to have at least the same cylinder bore & stroke as original but bigger bore is better? Seems rational or am I still in the weeds?

It should have the SAME BORE....period! As the M/C bore's diameter increases, the pedal becomes MORE difficult to push. You increase the bore diameter (on the M/C) enough and you become incapable of pushing hard enough on the pedal to stop. And it doesn't take much, either. This is why you have to be careful when adding a dual M/C on an old Ford. The stock pedal obviously has only so much room to swing. And God forbid if you have some extra carpet and padding to take-up space under the pedal. It takes some delicate engineering to get it done PROPERLY. DD

Guess I didn’t get it, so w Ford / Lockheed’s on front & rear w MC u need a dual stage MC w same bore as. ‘40-‘48 single stage.

Yes! With the stock, single M/C you obviously only had ONE, single bore size, right? DD
