on my 37 rear end there the numbers stamped where I understand the gear ratios would be and it is 1 39 and a inch or two away is stamped 2 and that is all how can you tell the ratio from this?

If it is actually an 11-39, it would indicate it originally had that wonderful 3.54 ratio that everyone wants. DD

On most banjo housing the ring and pinion tooth counts were stamped at the factory on the bottom rib. You divide the bigger number by the smaller number. In the example above 39 divided by 11 equals 3.54. Common numbers are 9 with 34 which is a 3.78 and 9 with 37 which is 4.11.

I was referred to physically checking the ratio. You can jack one wheel up and count tire rotations (which I would have to look up because I have never done it). Or remove the fill plug and mark a tooth on the ring gear and then slowly turn the gear and count the teeth.
