Default Mystery Noise Located

A few weeks ago I posted about a strange pinging noise in my 49 F1. It sounded like spark knock but that was finally ruled out. Really tired of hearing it, I pulled the intake manifold and found a metal tube that had been clanging around like a single note wind chime. One end was supposed to be in the hole shown at the bottom of the photo and the other in a hole in the bottom of the manifold. My first reaction was that I must have knocked it over as I installed the manifold. After thinking about it more, I can remember locating the gasket over the top end of the tube and also the noise did not start for a few thousand miles after that last valve adjustment. Anyone ever hear of this happening before? In any case, this tough old flathead still ran fine but make a helluva racket.

Just something to think about. Is it possible that the tube is a 59AB? The 59 tube is shorter than the 8ba an may not have been stuck in the block. Walt

I guess that's possible. The previous owner had it rebuilt so I really don't know. One end seems to be swedged down slightly and the other slightly larger. Tube was 1 5/16" dia by my measurement. I hammered the dents out of the end and smoothed it up before tapping it back into the block. It was a good tight fit. Engine sure sounds better now.

There the same dia. on both ends, they press into the block about 1/4in. the 59 tube is about 1/8in. below the top of the block, the 8ba tube sticks up above the block about 1/8in. and the 8ba gasket fits over it. Walt

Thanks, Walt. I think I must have the 8 BA as it does stick up thru the gasket. Great information and I really appreciate it. Just washed it and getting ready to have a quiet cruise around the area!

As I understand your problem, the tube that comes out of the fuel pump stand, and into the block, and covers the push rod, came loose and was rattling around. I had that same problem once on my 39 Mercury. Tough to diagnosed, easy to fix. Was yours just laying there, never installed?

No, it is at the front end of the engine going from the block to the intake manifold. It was installed the last time I took the manifold off to adjust the valves but laying in the valley when I opened it up this time.

The crankcase ventilator tube. That is strange. I don't see how it could come loose if it was properly installed. Strange.

Think we are talking about this tube, at the front of the engine.

Lawson.......It has nothing to do with the fuel pump. Look at the picture closely. DD

Lawson,
It's NOT the baffle from the fuel pump pushrod area at the back, it's the breather stand pipe that lives in the front of the valley.
Tanner,
with the stand pipe fulley Home with the swedged part sitting down hard in the hole, does the pipe top end still sit above the inlet deck? This would tell you if it's the right one. I know you said it did last time the inlet was off, but it may have not been fulley Home at the bottom.
Martin.

Hey, I just had cataract surgery in my left eye and can't see worth a crap. That's my story and I am sticking to it. I guess I jumped the gun and put down my first thought without thinking, which I am wont to do on occasion. LOL
