Default Best shift for 0-60 time?

3.31 rear end OD trans with toggle switch. 276 ci, 4bbl ,aluminum heads, 3/4 cam.

1) Forget the OD?
or

2) Use the OD and pause to let it shift from 2nd to 2ndOD?

without breaking anything

You don't say what transmission but overdrives were NOT designed for racing.
With 3.31 gears, you should be able to go well past 60 mph in first gear.

You will get a much better time without the Over Drive.

Thanks guys, got me to do the calculation, its a stock tranny.

2nd (no OD) is 4800 rpm at 60mph. I should get a tach.

I have pretty much the same setup in mine (OD with toggle switch). For around town like to use 2nd with OD. That way I have a little bit of engine compression to slow down for stopping or turning.

rand if george doesnt explain it to you there are several different articles on the internet about wiring the solinoid direct thats the toggle switch i have that setup in my merc works well. been a real long time since i put it in but it goes something like this. hot to the toggle wire from toggle to relay wire from relay to solinoid. 30 mph flip the switch let off fuel and press back down should lock up. now you have to remember to flip the switch off when you stop and start again or youll still be in od in first gear not real healthy for the motor.if i forgot a step someone will yell im sure. but check the net to be sure.

Did the toggle switch thing on a '50 w/OD that I purchased to get home, (Albany, N.Y.), from Sheppard AFB, (Witchita Falls, Texas), back in 1962. Didn't have a lot of money. I believe I grounded one of the terminals on the relay via the toggle. Got the job done but, as said above, I had to remember to throw the switch when slowing up. You do what you gotta do to. We sure had fun!!

Run the ground circuit thru the governor & then you don't have to "throw the switch".
The thinking will be done for you.

Oldsman41, yes the toggle switch is eliminated. The governor automatically (at about 28 mph) provides the ground for the solenoid to activate, that's what the manual toggle is doing.

Don't eliminate the toggle, just put it in series with the governor to relay wire (ground).
The toggle replaces the kick down switch.
