Default Steering lube- Penrite 1200W

I saw reference today on FB that an A owner is using Penrite steering lube to eliminate leakage. It sounds like the lube is more of a gel, and if its 1200 W, it obviously is quite viscous. So I checked the Restoration Supplies catalog. In spite of new gaskets, O-ring on the sector, light rod tube, etc., I have a leak and I don't want to have to pull the steering gear and try again. It seems like it'll be a possible fix. I'm using a 600W and STP mix that's still leaking.

Does anyone have any long term experience with the Penrite steering box lubricant? Would it work well in a box with needle bearings? with bushings?

Thanks

I was the poster Bruce. Will keep you updated on the leakage. Mine was so bad I actually pop riveted a small bread pan to the engine splash pan under the box. The penrite literature mentions stopping leaks as an additional benefit. Will let you know.

What supplier carries it, and in what quantity?

I have used it in early Lincolns and Pierce Arrows with good results. The Lincolns have Gemmer boxes, although larger than an A,the pierce has a Ross. Neither has any sort of seal. Usually on an A we replace the sector bushing with one having a seal installed when we rebuild them, but there's no such thing for the big classic cars so we use Penrite. Its time consuming to install as it moves very slowly. I get it from Restoration Supply Co.

How much (quantity) of the Penrite are putting in the Gemmer box? Filling till she's full?

Thanks.

What's wrong that it leaks so bad?
With mine, I replaced the wire bale holder with the tube type and installed the external o ring on the sector shaft no more leaks in 8 years.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe the man said he was using an F100 steering box.. Restoration Supply Co also has Lubriplate in 1000W and 1500W..

Well, a week after adding Penrite to my F-100 steering box I see no leaks. i used the car this past Saturday for a wedding. It was great as I put 60 miles or better on the car on wonderful country roads with lots of curves and turns. I feel like I'm now driving the car instead of it driving me.

Steering Box
Lube PENRITE
Approximately 1200W oil which will not run out of your steering box or track like grease. This is
the best lube for all non “power” steering boxes. It’s also good for enclosed U joints, engine couplers,
and other parts which require a very thick, sticky lubricant.
(500ml bottle).

LUB009 $14.60/btl
Semi Fluid
Grease
PENRITE
Penrite Semi-Fluid Grease, about 1200W, is an extreme pressure, lithium soap grease, blended
using a high viscosity base oil and effective anti-wear, rust and oxidation inhibitors. It can be used
in Veteran and Vintage gear boxes, leaky gear boxes and chain cases. Does not splash, resist leakage
and squeeze-out. Minimizes wear and shock loads Operates from 0 to 275 degrees.
(500ml)

1200W in a gearbox? It makes all the debate about 600W look a little tame!

Has anyone tried this in an 'A gearbox?

Cheers
Mike.

It would not slow down the gears during double clutching, it would stop them!!

True, but if you look at Skip's comment, the semi-fluid grease is suggested for vintage & veteran gear boxes.

Cheers
Mike.

Thumbs up Re: Steering lube- Penrite 1200W

Well, checked the label and did not find a part number. Simply states "Penrite Steering Box lube approximately 1200 wt". IMHO it is neither an oil or a grease in the normal "shop" lingo. I consider it more of a gel. Almost two weeks and no noticeable leaks which is wonderful. I was able to fill the box and have almost half a bottle left. It helped to turn the wheel back and forth while putting the stuff in.

Penrite LUB009 Steering Box Lube. Works for me.

Drained the 600W by removing the lower plate on the two tooth steering box. Allowed the 600W to drain over-night. Reinstalled the lower plate and filled the steering box with the Penrite LUB009.

That was over three weeks ago. The car has been on the road each of the last three weekends. Temperature in the mid 90 degree range on each of the trips.

No more leaking where the sector exits the steering sector housing. The steering gear box is smooth and tight with no excess "play" in the unit. Really no need to rebuild the steering box. The Penrite sure beats tearing the steering box apart when this product will stop the leaking. Good stuff!
