I agree. He is a good kind of nuts though. The engine does make a good educational tool.

I've seen it before. The guy basically said it was a crap engine that he did this to.

We did that once when I was a motorcycle mechanic. Used a Yamaha two stroke twin with one head removed. With a variable timing light we could "stop" the piston at various places in the bore and actually see the fuel droplets coming thru the transfer ports. Then we put the choke on and got a lot of gas coming thru.

Great fun. Like it was suggested it could of been a great teaching tool to explain how a two stroke works. If we had thought of it...

But then we had to put the customers bike back together and that ended our fun... just kidding.

I first saw Uncle Barn and his open A engine last year at the Hill and Valley Model A and T meet in Cross Plains, WI. He fires it up for a few minutes on the half hour and has a lively discussion / Q & A with this audience...He is the real thing for being a very creative self taught mechanical guy and he also happens to be a really nice guy. He has taken this engine to several Model A events and is wanting to encourage the younger generation to start wrenching on old engines...

He oils any open exposed bearing / wear areas with an oil can and also has some oil lines with oilers. His Open Model A Engine is run at an idle with no load and just for a short time.

Three thoughts jumped into my head about that fast.
#1 Hey that's Neat!
#2 Looks alittle dangerous with that exposed flywheel area and crank spinning (This thought is due to working at US Steel and them beating safety into our heads everyday all day.)
#3 Wow that must be nice to have all your projects finished and go looking for unusual things to build just for the heck of it.

Great video I'd like to see the thing in person. Greenfield Village and or The Henry Ford should have one, At least at their big car show coming up next month.

I can't help but wonder how he lubricates the engine if there's no oil in it? Still a cool thing to see nonetheless.

Here is yet another running Open Model A Engine that was being displayed at the ILL Reg Swap meet this last Saturday. Very nice job on this !!!! It is an upright setup and not layed out on its side like Uncle Barn's version...

He has grease zerks in the valve guide bosses.
