I've got Smitty's on both my 47, and my 34. I've had them for several years, and I'm happy with them. Which is not to say that I wouldn't be happy with the various other choices mentioned here.

I started with straight pipes with my 48 Flathead powered 35 Coupe - lasted one day and proved insanely loud - and I do like loud - but that was ridiculous - so since the exhaust system was built with flanged section - was able to bolt up 26" mufflers (Smithy’s? need to check) and now happy with the result. Of course in my case I am running a slightly higher power than most so might be the reason for my experience. See picture - flanged exhaust so I can easily change out muffler options.

I used some generic Steel Bullet shaped Blanks with steel packing from the local muffler shop. After 30 years the packing is gone But the sound is still great

PeterC, agree with petehoovie above!! That is one beautiful undercarriage and what an amazing job to get it looking that way!! Your 35 Coupe is awesome

As for mufflers, I used Porters before on a Chevy 235, great mufflers, very well built. I might use them again on my Ford.

I have a ‘36 21 stud engine with a stock style single exhaust in a Model A pickup. I put a Smithy’s on it with temporary installation for initial road testing. I was going up a hill and a connection before the muffler came apart and it felt like someone ran into the back of me. The thing had seemed to be weak on hills and after that muffler was eliminated it came alive. I ended up putting a 20” Summit glass pack on it and the hill climbing power is still good as well the sound. No Smithy’s for me in the future. The Smithy’s do have a pretty good choke in them due to the size of the baffles/louvers.

Smithy's are junk. Nothing like the originals. Mine rotted out to I put a pair of Thrush Cherry Bombs on it. A little louder, but sound ok. Not raspy like I remember them being on overheads.

If they still make them, Hush Thrush's sound great on my dad's '32 Tudor with a stock 59AB engine.

Edit: I just checked their site. Seems like they've change the Hush model. The ones my dad has is like a Smitty's (straight through and round).

Neat thing about Thrush's site is they have sound samples.

For an update. I did call Porter and spoke with the sales tech. I asked some very pointed questions about there product and how it stacked up against other mufflers. He was very candid and helpful. Here are a few of my impressions.

1. The mufflers are packed with Stainless Steel not Fiberglass. Glass-packs tend to change tone over time as the fiberglass burns away, steel- packs keep their tone.

2. The muffler casing is made out of a heavy grade steel and the design and construction has not changed since 1931.

3. I was told that they have many customers that have been running the same porter mufflers for 20+ years.

4. The design does hot have a harmonic drone when driving on the highway.

5. They are still made in the USA!

6. On U-Tube there is a lot of videos on how they sound.

I am not trying to sell one muffler over another just sharing my impressions. I did end up purchasing a set for my Roadster.
