Default Mounting Hood Clamps, 1931

When placing the hood clamps on the front fender shelf, does the clamp lay on the shelf when not in use thereby protecting the fender from nicks? Thanks for your help, Ed

The hood hooks can lay flat to the outside.

The 30/31 hood latches are a two bolt mounting, so they can be installed to fold inward to the engine, or outward towards the fenders. So install them to fold outwards, as Tom says. If you install them to fold to the inside, they will constantly interfere with closing your hood.

I don't know what the "correct" method is.
I have mine positioned so they will lay flat towards the engine. Thus they rest against the bracket back when leaning to the outside fenders. The hooks can't fall onto the fenders and cause scratches and paint chips. 28/29 hood latches can only be mounted one way with their 3 bolt mounting. They have the latches fall out towards the fenders. Good luck. Jeff

I am quite sure that the correct method is as Tom in post #2 describes . I however do as JDupuis does and for the reason that he explained. I do have nicked paint caused by installing these correctly. So I have changed them around.

pg 243 of service bulletins show a dwg.with hood clip as per Tom's post #2. Also, the repop triangular pads for the '31's may need to be shaved very slightly off the back for an easier fit.

My clamps are installed per the manual, falling outward. To prevent scratching the paint, I put black electrical tape an the handle to keep this from happening. Hard to see and easily removed. Works for me.

Thank you for all the replies. The Service Bulletin picture should be the correct way. Ed

Most of the suppliers offer the small rubber pieces that fit over the ends of the handle and the hold down tip. They are also allowed during fine point and touring judging .

The repro hood hooks I've seen don't have the correct shape to the hook. They are sharp and ugly.
