Default Exterior Door Handles

How do you identify NOS vs. Repro?

Do these look like original or repro?

One issue that I have seen with repro handles is that the chrome plating was applied to the shaft as well as the handle preventing the shaft from fitting in the door latch unless it was dressed down. These were older repros so I don't know if that problem still exists. I am not that familiar with 28-29 handles which I believe your are but originals were nickel plated whereas a lot (most?) of the repros are chrome plated.

What are the differences between 28/29 and 30/31 handles?

The handles in your pictures are reproduction.

The orientation of the key slot is different
They are cast from some type of pot metal in a mold,
originals are made from several pieces of stamped stainless steal or brass and crimped together.
Look at the mounting part with the two screw holes, repo is thick cast metal, original is thin stamped metal.
Most original shafts will have a key code stamped on them.
The 30-31 mounting surface where it touches the door is curved,
the 28-29 is straight.

You can spot a repro handle from 20 feet away by looking at the key slot.

The pictures show original handles.

Depends on the model. The Judging Standards have a very good description of the handles used on various years/models. Finishes varied -nickel, chrome, stainless- and shape/design depended on year and model. If you don't have access to Judging Standards and don't want to buy one, most supplier catalogs will give you an idea of which handles fit which cars, although repro finishes won't necessarily be correct. It would help if you would post the year/model of your car.

It's a 30 coupe. Anyone know of a source for originals?

dmaxweb,

There is not much “NEW Old Stock” left. Do you mean “Original Equipment” as compared to Repro?
