Classic seat spring woes and fixes
Some interesting bits on the seat back. Cover was replaced with new vinyl in the mid 60's and the seat back placed on a high shelf in a dry barn. On Sunday I pulled it down, thinking my Daddy would get a kick out of using it on his pickup after all these years. I guess the mice had a different idea. Anyone want to guess what was laying on the seat that made such a nice nesting area? The area immediately around the hole tells the tale.
So then I stripped off all the old upholstery and noticed a break in one of the wires. Just as I was getting ready to braze it back together, I noticed a splice at another break, and then another. 20d nails and hog rings apparently make good seat spring frame splicers back in the day. After that I figured this is a wall hanger and some lucky vendor will get to sell me a new one. |

Re: Classic seat spring woes and fixes
I made a plywood bottom and back. Used several layers of different density foam on the bottom and foam on back reducing the thickness of the back by two inches. Covered both with the original lookin looking material used in trucks. It’s much more comfortable than the springs.

Perhaps Berts has a usable used one? Might save a couple of bucks.
