Default Reproducing manifold heater "sock"

Hello - I've posted a couple messages in the past concerning replacements for the asbestos sock with spring inside that was used on the old manifold heaters. Here's what I ended up doing -- not high tech, but maybe it might help someone else

I cut a proper length of correct id flexible exhaust pipe (8" X 2.5" diameter for my car) and covered it in a slightly wider fiberglass hose (3" diameter). The fiberglass will unravel very quickly, so I pulled it tight and sprayed it with multiple coats of high-temp white paint. The result look pretty good, but we'll see how it holds up over time. Hope it works because I've been missing my heater!

That looks good. I have heard also that there is an aircraft flex hose supported by coiled wire that closely resembles the original hose.

Hey Ken - If it's what I think it is, the fiberglass may have the same heat properties, but it does not work the same. I've tried to recreate the asbestos sock with it but the stuff unravels in no time without some coating on it. I wasn't very happy with the results. You can get the fiberglass sock from ebay and avoid the middleman as well.

This has been a problem for aircraft with similar ducting too. The Hughes/MDHI 500 models I maintain have cooling ducts inside the engine compartment that direct cooling air to various spots on the turbine engine. It gets very hot back there so these ducts don't last a long time. Some of the hard mounted parts of the ducting are glass reinforced polyester (fiberglass) tube with what is refered to as SCEET duct for the flexible portions. To make the solid fiberglass sections last longer, I have covered them with high temp silicon and this helps the hardened resin last longer. The SCEET tube is made by Aeroduct and the name is a designation for the type of construction. SCEET refers to double wall tubing made from fiberglass cloth that is impregnated with high temp silicon resin with a orange to red color. It has a spring inside that is constructed between the layers of cloth to hold the shape and a white thread spirally wound around the outside. It is available in all sorts of fractional inside diameter sizes. I think that Aircraft Spruce and Specialty Company carries Aeroduct in all of it's diffeent forms.

As far as changing the color, I don't know how effective that would be but it may be possible. A person might be able to wrap it with a light colored fiberglass tape but it would have to be renewed every so often.
