I would think anything small enough be threaded into the end of a key would break off post haste with the first slide hammer whack.
I agree with Automotive Stud, I have not seen a hub that couldn't be pulled with the KRW tool.

As for the disaster shown above, I have seen a loose hub that works back and forth, peel the side off the keyway and twist the end of the axle in such a way what remained of the keyway twisted 1/4 the way around the axle before it broke the end off. I will try to find it.
It was saved to take to a meeting to show people what loose hubs can do. Remember the hub drives off the taper, not the key/keyway.

you can try loosing the nuts and driving in circles or figure 8's. Sometimes they pop loose.

Isn't the keyway only tapered at one end "the curve" goes down to the axle front. its straight otherwise?

The keyway is curved at the end, the key is curved/tapered to fit. Everything I have taken apart had the curved end down and that's how I put it back together.

That explains it, redmodelt. the curved or rounded end of the key was outward, so the inside end of the key lifted up into the hub, and caught it, as dug into the hub. So the key was backwards. I got confused with the story myself. Newc

If the curved end of the key is not pointed towards the inner direction, and face down the hub will run crooked, and look like a bent axle. The key slot is cut for the key to fit that way, period. Al
