Re: Timing question
You will have to line up the dots used the 4 bolts or drop pan remove key line up and put key back in. At that time the rotor should point at #1 pass side.
The timing is off the intake is about 45 degs to soon. You still have 125 lbs but out of time. So line up the dots ,rotor points to #1 pass side. Put dist mid position and hit the key should run. |

Re: Timing question
Looking at the end of cam looks like it may have been tried to put dist. 180 out.
That why I said point the rotor to #1 The mark was made to get Dot in correct position. Some type of fixture. The intake was closed at bottom of compression, driving the piston home TDC Showed good 125lbs but out of time. I think this will fix problem. |

Re: Timing question
One thing you can do is compare the new timing gear to the old one.

Re: Timing question
Okay guys, i got it figured out.
Go ahead, get ready to kick a idiot in the butt (nice for what what I've said to myself tonight). After days of tearing it down, checking and rechecking and finding nothing wrong, I had an epiphany. This thing has sat 8 months, i ran out of Seafoam water remover last winter but had 4 bottles of stuff my Dad had when he passed away, 3 years ago, HEET water remover and I put a couple bottles of that in over the winter. Last night after rechecking things is when I had the epiphany. Which was, EVERYTHING I've checked is right and good and the ONLY thing I hadn't checked is, as flatjack9 had mentioned it might be, the fuel. I got me some fresh fuel, drained the carb, hooked the fresh cup of fuel to the fuel pump and started cranking. As soon as the fuel bowl filled and I pumped the pedal a few times, it happened. She STARTED and ran fine. I've started and restarted it a dozen times and it starts immediately and runs great every time. Now to put it all back together, one last time and drain the fuel tank. Damn what an idiot I am |

Re: Timing question
In pic #10 you lined up with cut in cam gear, When changing so many things you must have lined up the dots. There is 19 teeth between from cut to dot.
I think that when the dots are lined up the cut is at 12 o'clock, make easy to mess crank gear. Good you got it running and didn't,t have to junk it. LOL |

Re: Timing question
probably gonna be the last post on this one.
I finally got it all back together, drained the fuel tank and put 5 gal of fresh fuel in. I went back over everything because i was literally touching everything looking at everything. I almost forgot I had removed one of the side cover bolts but did not take the cover off, I had thought I would watch the valve timing that way but figured out it was fuel before I got to that point. To make a long story short, its all back together and after a little carb adjusting idles very smooth, and at 185 temp has 35 lbs oil pressure. All thats left now is putting the hood back on. |

Re: Timing question
It could be something simple like a bad condenser or the coil failing as it warms up?

Re: Timing question
Well done. It's funny when people post that they've fixed the problem on page 2 and folks are still replying to the original problem on page 1 not realising it has been fixed. Done it myself a couple of times.

Re: Timing question
There seams to be lot of interest in this post with 950 hits.
The real problem that was done to fix , " was the dots were lined up". Someone moved it to the dots. Post 10 shows wrong, should be dots lined up. |

Re: Timing question
If you were out in the woods and found a guy who was lost, would trust his sense of direction and let him lead you out?
Some of us would.

Re: Timing question
Hoop, all depends on the amount of alcohol in my blood.
George, Dots arent and wont line up, they are both on teeth and will only sit side by side. The slot is still lined up with the dot. Mart, yep fresh fuel did it. I cant believe all the headache I caused myself not suspecting the fuel. |
