Re: Looking for a better rear end
As far as axle shafts with the 8" unit, that's not the problem, both 8" & 9" used the same 28 spline axles. The carrier is weaker in the 8", the spyder gears(pinions)and shaft are smaller and the carrier holes for the shaft start to elongate rapidly with hard use.
The pinion gear shaft mimicks the one in a 9", but is smaller in diameter and weaker. I used to break the pinion gear shaft off right behind the companion flange with a hard 2nd gear in a '65 Mustang(tough on driveshafts too)with a worked over 289. That's why Ford used a 9" in the K coded cars(hypo 289's). If you decide to make a change, try to find a 9", it's stronger than an 8.8" and both axles are the same length, centering the pumpkin in the chassis |

Re: Looking for a better rear end
There are many 600 - 800 HP Mustangs with the 8.8 out there being hammered hard on the strip with no issues. I play hard with my 08 GT500 (502 rear wheel HP) and have not had the first issue.

The GT500 have a beefier 8.8 then the standard mustang or other 8.8. That is not to say it is not okay for most cases. |

Re: Looking for a better rear end
Thank's guys all this knowledge has me confused more than ever (LOL) the 8 inch I rebuilt seem ok for now, but want something a little stronger so I don't blow something up on the road. Getting pretty damn tired of all this rain, don't drive either car in wet conditions. Seem's like every week we have rain. If I don't get my yard mowed I'm going to have to get me some goats, Al

Re: Looking for a better rear end
One thing to consider with those late model rear axles is that they are geared for overdrive transmissions. While they have a good (read fun) ratio for around town, you would be running higher R's on the highway with your C4.

Re: Looking for a better rear end
For fans of the 8.8", research C-CLIP ELIMINATORS.
