Another Big Foot Model A
My neighbor just emailed me this. AA radiator shell and 30-31 rear brake drums. Other than that, this is a mystery. Would anyone else like to shed some more light on this very odd and interesting AA truck?

Looks like the front axle is turned upside down.

Re: Another Big Foot Model A
That was a 'custom made' vehicle made exclusively for the delivery of U.S. Mail to the rural areas of the country side. I have seen several of these types of vehicles - all were made to deliver the U.S. Mail, although I am sure that others were built to deliver other types of goods as well.
Other similiar vehicles of this type I have seen were based on the then current Model T. None of these types of vehicle have I seen that were not based on the FORD platform. - Doug Vieyra, Eureka, Calif 56 degrees at noon. |

Re: Another Big Foot Model A
That radiator shell was used on all commercial trucks. A and AA.

Hi Mike,
Interesting A with a T front axle or A upside down?. Also I like the gas station in the back ground. Thanks, Jim Sinclair |

Re: Another Big Foot Model A
The tires have the same tread design of the old basket style hay rakes, wheels most likely from the same implement and just modified for the truck hubs.

Re: Another Big Foot Model A
That's neat. Monster Model A's. Could you imagine this parked outside a Ford dealership today for display?

Re: Another Big Foot Model A
I think the "Unauthorized Accessories" book shows the High Wheel options.
Maybe referred to as "Stilt wheels?" Joe K

Pneumatic. The "P" is silent - like in swimming.
Sorry - old joke. Joe K

Re: Another Big Foot Model A
My grandfather in North Dakota had a rural mail route and drove a Model A with huge wheels like that one. I have a picture of it someplace and will try to find it.

Re: Another Big Foot Model A
Back about 1961 before the days of 35W , there was a town north of Mpls St Paul on Highway 61. Next to a gas station of the town sat the most strangest Model A I have ever seen. It looked a lot like the one pictured except the tires were much skinnier. Every time we came through that town on our trips to the lake I would look for it. I remember that it was 1930 features, had stainless shell. Finally saw a picture of it in the book Unauthorzed Accessories.

Re: Another Big Foot Model A
I've just looked at all the replies and they all bring a smile. Thanks.
These high wheelers certainly are very striking. In fact, I've got a couple of rough AA trucks in the barn just sitting there with nothing to do. HMMMM?? It wouldn't be impossible to weld some monster spokes to AA hubs and attach to very narrow antique 38" tractor rims? Would need to be careful to set it all up true. This one only has four large spokes. So many projects, so little time! SIGH!! |

Re: Another Big Foot Model A
I can't think of the model hay rake that had tires very similar to those but we had one of them but that was years ago.
I would think that if cars had tires why the farm implement's would not have them also. |
