Default carburater

I have a stock 255 ci. flathead . I just picked up a nice 1955 ford carb. it has 1 1\16 on the back and ecg s on one side and ford on the other side. Is this carb. to much for the flathead??. Jack.

Nope. As a matter of fact, it may not be enough. To use it, you will have to change the intake manifold to a Ford manifold that accepts a 3 bolt carburetor. That manifold will probably have throttle bores that are smaller than the carburetor (I'm not sure as I've never measured that particular combination.) They will for sure be smaller than the Mercury manifold. If you are planning on using this on a Mercury automobile, you're probably better off sticking with a mercury 4-bolt manifold and matching carburetor. If it's for a modified vehicle, there are lots of better choices.

I have a '51 Merc engine in my '51 Ford, and I have a Canadian Mercury 4 bolt aluminum manifold on it with a Rochester 2 GC carburetor, and it works very well. The Rochester has even larger throttle bores than the Mercury carburetor. I had to bore out the manifold to match the carburetor.

If you have the proper intake manifold on the Mercury engine (you did say "stock engine"; only Mercury's were 255" stock), it would have a manifold for a 4 bolt carburetor. If it doesn't, it has been previously changed. After 64 years, many other changes could have been made to your engine. How do you know it's a 255?

If the engine has a manifold for a 3 bolt carburetor, you can use that carburetor on that engine. If the engine is in decent shape and runs well, it should be fine. It's close enough that you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Just for info, the ECG 5 carb you described is originally for a 1955 Ford with a 272 Y-Block V8.
