Is my coil compromised?
I have a standard igition set up however using modern style points, my key switch was left on and drained a fully charged battrey. After charging it starts and runs ok, have not taken on a road test and gotten things hot. Should I be concerned that my coil may now be compromised and could let me have some problems further down the road?. Also just for the thought process depending on where the engine was stopped (cam position) with either points making contact or not I either dodged a bullet or caught one?

If the battery was dead the points were closed and you may have damaged the coil and the points. The coil can be tested and the points inspected and dressed up. If it starts and runs normally I would just drive it and see how it goes. Most likely if it passes the first hot test it will be fine.

Re: Is my coil compromised?
If the points were open I wouldn't think it would have drained the battery. I am conservative, I think I would replace the coil and check the points.

Re: Is my coil compromised?
Change the coil just because and avoid possible problems on the road when the coil warms up. Been there done that.

Re: Is my coil compromised?
It happened to me over 10 years ago, didn't do anything, hand crank started it, 20 minutes of driving and starter worked--- still haven't change anything except battery, it died 7 years later

Re: Is my coil compromised?
Just carry a spare coil. These sorts of things happen to me when i lend people cars and the coils don't always die.
