41 Secan Part # help (Aftermarket)
Looking for the part numbers for fender welt between the upper and lower parts of a 41 two part fender.
I need to buy both the rear welting and this but the vender I was looking at does not list two different parts and I know these are different. Thanks, Dave |

Re: 41 Secan Part # help (Aftermarket)
Seems like I may be in for more of a hunt for this then I expected.
Green Book does not list a part number for this part that I see. Will I need to purchase a similar material to what was there and wing-it? Only one listed is 48 016070-S and this is what I call the welting. |

I don't believe that there is fender welt between the upper and lower fender of the 41 with the two piece fender.

No welting TJ just an anti-squeak material somewhat like a gasket.

Re: 41 Secan Part # help (Aftermarket)
The anti squeek listed in the 1938 thru 41 Chassis parts catalog is P/N 11A-16381-A that goes between the fender and the apron for the 19A models. There is also a P/N 11A-16381-B but it is listed for the Ford 11A models. It gives no further discription. Most anti squeek materials were like thin rubber tape or just plain rubber strip on a roll. It's listed as a class I item but I can't find a discription of what the classes mean. If you know what the width is and the thickness plus any other shapes like a bulbed edge then you can likely find some company that extrudes a similat rubber shape. If it is plain flat rubber with cloth reinforcement, you should be able to find something similar to that as well.

Re: 41 Secan Part # help (Aftermarket)
Later cars like my 51 Mercs have a cloth reinforced rubber strip but it is recessed in the gap of the rear quarter and the front grill opening panel far enough that you really have to look at the gaps to even see the material there. If it was intended to be seen by the OEM, it may have been the cloth doped with pyroxylin so that paint would stick. If that is the case, you can use cloth tape and buy some nitocellulose aircraft dope from Aircraft Spruce. They also carry the cloth tape. You would make a mess doping the cloth on some wax paper but it could be done.

Re: 41 Secan Part # help (Aftermarket)
416, maybe you could make up some anti-squeak from fender welt. Fender welt is sewn around a small piece of round material. If you split the welt at the seam you could remove the round material and would just have one layer of material. That could be inserted between the fender halves for anti-squeak. If you move the excess material to the inside of the fender it could be trimmed off with a razor blade after the fenders are bolted together. Welting material holds up well and would last a long time between the fenders.

Re: 41 Secan Part # help (Aftermarket)
Update- I should have come back to this earlier.
I did stop by the local restoration shop and ask them about the friction tape as they called it. I believe they had some of the original stuff that they use on restorations. When I told him the car was a hotrod they to me to go to my local sporting goods store and buy some hockey tape. So if anyone needs to replace the friction tape between the fender seam, you can use a $5.00 roll of tape used for taping up hockey sticks. Hope this helps someone else also. Dave |
